Toot

Had a long chat with one of my personal tutees (students for whom I have pastoral care). Very smart, articulate, and funny young woman who is ASD and has a modest physical disability. She told me about an automated interview where the AI gave her some kind of feedback at the end. Apparently it "concluded" that she is not a team player and is anti-social. This could not be more wrong. I wonder whether she will get a rejection tomorrow…  I'm pretty outraged. #AI #bias #risk #disability

(I can't reply to you @statsguy without some faff so I[m replying to myself.)

Tomorrow she has another interview with a very different, much smaller company. And you know what? They use the same fucking platform… let's see what happens. At least with that one, I know someone who knows someone on the inside so maybe we can compensate for the bias.

I don't mind her not getting the internship. But I do mind if it's based on something spurious, undermining and insulting.

@sellathechemist I'm pretty sure this is borderline unlawful, and there might be options to pursue.

It's enraging that this sort of thing happens, and it will only get worse if people don't push back.

Good luck to her and to you.

@sellathechemist Maybe she dodged a bullet there. Just imagine working for a company that is crazy enough to think that using AI to do interviews is a good idea. I'm sure she can do better.

@statsguy @sellathechemist but the person who decided to use the AI might not be the folks they'd be working with :(

@geonz @statsguy @sellathechemist It reflects more on the company's general decision making culture and competence. If they can hire one doofus...

@martinvermeer @statsguy @sellathechemist Except there are so many, many such doofuses out there that it's hard to dodge them.

@geonz @martinvermeer @sellathechemist Yes it is. But probably worth the effort.

@sellathechemist There was a time where if I wanted to see what happened in a dystopian future I'd have to watch a movie like Terminator or Mad Max or something.

Now I just switch on the news.

@sellathechemist

Years ago, before the AI boom, I pulled out of the recruitment process for what I thought was an enlightened organisation because they wanted to use online "personality tests".

My complaint provided links to evidence that such things are biased and not accurate.

It was a major Linux distro company, present in the UK.

I really didn't expect them to use such bs.

@sellathechemist in my experience giving feedback can be difficult after an interview. I can see why you might take the lazy approach of using AI. Rejection is not easy particularly at the start of a career. Having an jumped up algorithm won't make it easier. Using AI as a means of compliance with employment law doesn't seem suitable given the drivel they can produce.

@sellathechemist I learned many years ago not to do telephone interviews. I would suggest not doing automated interviews either. Face to face or not at all. It's hard not to "take the bait" but you see the results.
