With all the changes at Meta my wife is searching for a new social media home.

She most misses the sewing groups at Facebook, so my question is:

Any mastodon instances (or other fediverse project) that she could join? Or rather following some hashtags like #sewing?

English and perhaps French would be OK, but German is preferred (to keep concentration on fabrics instead of the translation ;-) )

We decided to search a new account on a general instance for her, then she will start to decorate her new fediverse home with people and hashtags.

@ridscherli You've pretty much got it in one with the #sewing tag. There's also a guppe group, but other than that there's no particular instance or anything we mostly just use the tag.

I can't speak for how much german content there is though, or whether there's a german equivalent hashtag like there is for some other crafts.

@thegiddystitcher there are German hashtags, but until now I didn't find anything that would be a "translation" to the overwhelming mass of toots with # sewing. So this will be definitely her entry point.

Einige Instanzen haben einen "translate" link integriert (deepl.com), andere nicht. Soweit ich richtig verstanden habe ist das eine Kostenfrage für die Betreibenden der Instanz. Vielleicht ein Auswahlkriterium?

Sie kann auch eine thematisch eigene Gruppe "eröffnen", wenn sie dies für sinnvoll erachtet. Die einfachste Möglichkeit ist eine nicht moderierte Gruppe, dafür nur den gewünschten Namen tippen und daran @ a.gup.pe (ohne Leerstelle) dranhängen.

@ridscherli there are some other hashtags too: #fiberarts and there's the group @ fiberarts@ a. gup .pe (remove the spaces)

I'm sure there are German equivalents as well. Good luck!

@ridscherli she might find Lemmy useful. It's federated and based on ActivityPub as well, but is more of a Reddit-style community. I see that there are two #sewing related communities there with a few thousand people:
