Dear scientists, especially the R-community:

The NZ government wants to scrap all soc social sciences and humanities. 🤯

I probably don't have to explain why this is a totally bonkers milei-ish idea. (maybe just add the detail that Māori researchers will be overproportionally affected by these budget cuts, but this is probably anyway a feature of the plan)

I address the #RStats community explicitely, since R was developed in Aotearoa. And here in the Fediverse we are many R nerds!

So, @kjhealy or other kiwis, is there something the international academic community could do to express our thoughts and support your struggle?

Just to say: Soils are heavily under pressure, but very much out of public attention. We really need to take care of our soil.

This report delves into the intricate interplay between drivers, pressures and impacts on soil in the 32 Member States of the European Environment Agency (EEA), along with six cooperating countries from the West Balkans, Ukraine and UK, shedding light on the multifaceted challenges facing soil conservation efforts. Our analysis shows the complex interactions among various factors, both anthropogenic and natural, shaping soil degradation processes and their subsequent consequences. We highlight key findings, including the significant impacts of soil degradation on agriculture, ecosystem resilience, water quality, biodiversity, and human health, underscoring the urgent need for comprehensive soil management strategies. Moreover, our examination of citizen science initiatives underlines the importance of engaging the public in soil monitoring and conservation efforts. This work emphasises the policy relevance of promoting sustainable soil governance frameworks, supported by research, innovation, and robust soil monitoring schemes, to safeguard soil health and ensure the long-term resilience of ecosystems.

Today is #WorldSoilDay !

What a good moment to think about this amazing ecosystem under our feet, the support for the roots of our food and thus our existence, the home of multibillions of organisms that work day and night to recycle nutrients, break down pollutants and make our planet a thriving habitat.

Don't ask what the soil can do for you, ask what you can do for the soil! 😊

Players:

HTS (a rebranded al-Qaeda group, jihadist, but at least not Assad): After the yearlong siege and final fall of Aleppo, this group was confined the small region of Idlib in the north, now in a surprise attack HTS managed to re-conquer most parts of Aleppo from Assad's Syrian Army.

Erdogan is using islamist groups in Syria as proxies to put pressure on the Kurds.

Assad depends on the military support by these three allies. All of them have lately problems of their own. Dictator Assad deserves his nickname "the butcher" totally (if there is any doubt).

While the administration and society in Rojava has many impressively progressive aspects, there are some conflicts with Arab Syrians. Because of the invasion by Turkish military and islamist mercenaries, the Kurds were forced to make some agreements with Assad.

Important to notice is that people in Aleppo are apparently happier under HTS rule than under Assad's. But the situation is complicated and volatile.

Schocken's clarifications:

"On Wednesday, Schocken clarified his remarks. "Given the reactions to my labeling Palestinians who commit acts of terror as freedom fighters, I have reconsidered my words. Many freedom fighters around the world and throughout history, possibly even those who fought for Israel's establishment, committed terrible acts of terrorism, harming innocent people to achieve their goals.

"I should have said: freedom fighters, who also resort to terror tactics - which must be combated. The use of terror is not legitimate."

"As for Hamas, they are not freedom fighters as their ideology essentially states, 'It's all ours, others should leave.' I have stated, though not in the conference speech but in an article, that the organizers and perpetrators of the October 7 attacks should be severely punished.

Schocken added, "There are Palestinian freedom fighters who do not use terrorism. Mahmoud Abbas, upon assuming his role as head of the Palestinian Authority, declared his decision to renounce terror and pursue only a diplomatic path. Perhaps for this reason, Netanyahu avoided establishing a relationship with him and chose Hamas instead."

Here is more background to the story:

"On 31 October 2024, Haaretz's publisher Amos Schocken made remarks during a speech at a Haaretz conference in London criticising the Netanyahu government for allegedly imposing an apartheid regime on the Palestinian population and referring to "Palestinian freedom fighters that Israel calls terrorists." In response, the Israeli interior, education, diaspora ministries severed ties with Haaretz while the Communications Minister Shlomo Karhi advocated a boycott of the newspaper covering all government bodies and employees. By 4 November, the newspaper had received hundreds of cancellation and subscription termination requests, and a decline in advertising revenue. Several ministries had requested to cancel their subscriptions, with the Israeli foreign ministry cancelling 90 subscriptions. Following significant criticism, Schocken retracted his remarks."

"Israeli Government Imposes Sanctions on Haaretz, Cuts All Ties and Pulls Advertising"

-> Now is the time to get a haaretz subscription, or support the newspaper otherwise, folks!

Yes, this newspaper is diverse, which means that not all opinions are of one's taste. But if we are interested in a solution that does not consist in erasing a population, haaretz has definitely a role to play.

Some asshole designer somewhere decided that it would be a good idea that most smartphones* have nowadays only ONE USB-C port and no jack for earplugs.

I hope this person bumps their toe or step barefoot on a lego brick. Repeated times.

in the name of Dog: why?

(I just bought an used smartphone since my old one died and I was not aware of this horrible hazard. Maybe I am late to the party, but that does not decrease my anger)

phew...

things are getting messy.

Now there are reports that there were several neo-nazis present at the events. It is unclear whether they were involved in the attacks.

And the frustration of the population is understandably huge, so it is plausible that the protests were normal people.

So, I don't want to give the credit of throwing mud to the nazis (they hate the king, but because they consider him a weak and liberal institution, and not because he is a conservative monarchist).

Social media are a delicate tool especially in complicated situations. We need to keep a cool head when talking about things that happen in real-time. (looking myself critically)

The King of Spain is visiting ground zero of the floods in the region of Valencia and people are showing their feelings. Maybe this was the first time in his life that he felt fear.

This is unheard of in Spain. As far as I knnow, the monarch was never received like this and much less thrown mud at.

People are upset because of the horrific management of the state (especially the regional far-right government of Valencia) and can't understand why thousands of officers are occupied in the visit of the king instead of providing disaster relief.

"Buzuruna Juzuruna: a haven of solidarity in times of war"

"Buzuruna Juzuruna is Lebanon’s most famous agro-ecological farm, located in Saadnayel, in the Bekaa valley – Lebanon’s breadbasket.

Rows of fruits and vegetables grow around an orange and yellow circus tent, while goats bleat nearby.

Here, twenty Syrians, Lebanese and French members work together to produce organic, local produce in short circuits: a revolutionary concept in a country dominated by agro-industrial practices.

Here, twenty Syrians, Lebanese and French members work together to produce organic, local produce in short circuits: a revolutionary concept in a country dominated by agro-industrial practices.

Over their eight years of experience, they even assembled an extensive “seed library”, as they call it. “We have 250 heirloom seed types, and enough to cover all of Lebanon”

“The idea behind our farm has always been self-sufficiency and food sovereignty in the event of a disaster: we’ve been working hard for eight years to get there”

https://shorkk.com/buzuruna-juzuruna/

Currently, Buzuruna Juzuruna give lentils to solidarity kitchens and hand out seed packages to farmers displaced by the war, so that they can continue to produce food as soon as they arrive somewhere in the northern regions.

PD: folks from Bristol (UK): you might want to check out shorkk, a cool online food shop.
