Anyone have any blogs or sites they like that a) have rss feeds b) are mostly interesting/positive/educational/music or science articles c) have a low probability of infuriating news leakage?

First real attempt at the Horsehead Nebula. Took a lot of processing to get here, I think I want to keep this data and add another hour or two to it and see how it develops. Really want to get the reflection nebulae to come out some, but I think they are fighting the LP filter. About 400x10s images here.

Way to step on my joke inexorable absurdity of current events.

While I was observing the sun today, an airliner flew across it just in the few moments I wasn’t recording video. It covered about half the sun and looked incredibly cool and I’m so mad I didn’t capture it.

This may be heresy but is there a way or has anyone thought about keeping track of play counts on Faircamp? Does that break the static nature of the site?

I finished redoing the https://12ax7.fm website last night with Faircamp. Pretty happy with it! A few hiccups that I was able to sort through. I'll probably tweak it here and there over time, and maybe wrap it in a larger site, but for now it's all I need. Nothing new there (yet) in terms of music.

Oh and thanks for the hosting suggestions everyone, but I realized I could piggyback on a server I already paid for lol.

@freebliss Hi Simon! Our Faircamp site just went up at https://12ax7.fm if you’re still collecting new users. Many thanks for the hard work that makes our easier!

Gonna move my 12ax7 band website off very expensive Squarespace and probably primarily use faircamp to set it up. Anyone have reasonable hosts they like?

Moon with Mars just emerged from occultation. Low clouds, bad seeing, and a hill got in my way but I saw it.

and before anyone comes at me as a luddite or whatever, I work in machine learning. I work on DNNs and deep-learning for domain specific tasks for which they are well-suited and act as a useful adjunct (classification, supervised control systems, etc.). There’s many places they aren’t the right tool! LLMs and GenAI are uniquely corrosive, IMO because of their attack on creativity, their inability to state confidence on their answers, and their masquerading as the right tool for all jobs.

One of the major reasons I have trouble giving what is currently termed “AI” any quarter is that the people running the companies continue to say in no uncertain terms that they hate us and want to go away because thought and creativity repulse them. I will not use this stuff for any reason, and if I have to retire because of it, I’ll do that.

Aside from everything else that’s completely backwards and wrong about this moron’s attitude there’s never been an easier time to learn music: vast educational resources online that dwarf what we had in the 80/90’s, cheap but high-quality instruments that you can shop for from your couch, computer studio gear and software that would've cost millions in the 90s now for $100s. It’s marketing and reaching an audience that sucks and that’s partly because of these same people!

These guys (and I think they are all guys) would love nothing more than to have all of culture replaced by a vast field of vending and gumball machines.

Actually scratch that, those things are useful.

Had a go at reprocessing M42 from the raw frames. Probably a bit overcooked, but I’m in the steep part of the (re-)learning curve. #seestar

Couple quick photos from my first try with new little telescope last night. The horsehead is real quick, like 5-6 min total exposure, needs like an hour. M42 was a good 45 min total exposure and I’ll want to reprocess it from the raw stacked frames at some point. The third thing is a terrible shot of Uranus (too close to the moon), but I’d never imaged or seen it before.

Poor seeing, weak focus, big moon, but I’m still pleased.
