I've been thinking a lot about the relationship between drawing from reference or life, drawing from imagination, and composition. Mostly I am struck by how many decisions we don't have to make when working from reference, how many choices I don't have to make - I don't have to decide on the pose, or colors, or light direction, or point of view, or the shapes of what I am painting, or the background, or...anything really. I just have to paint.

I want to make those choices though. Here and in chickens no 71 I was thinking about that, and trying on making more intentional choices about some of those things.

@playinprogress yep, those are clearly two separate skills to work on in parallel 😭

@leavt so much so it hurts sometimes. Here I was thinking I could draw but lol feels like learning to walk all over again 🥴

@playinprogress one thing you can do in between those 2 skills is have a reference, but draw it at a different angle or pose, good luck 🥲

@leavt oh, I have thoughts on this lol. Like this was quite a helpful practice: https://mastodon.art/@playinprogress/110638279119594775

@leavt sometimes I have more energy for the hard stuff than at other times. last year was more of a "simple fun" kinda year, this year I might push a bit harder again. We'll see

@playinprogress thank you for sharing those it's super helpfull, i love your very structured and modular approach to it (i love structure), i've got a list of similar goals, last year for example was learning vehicles (both observation and imaginative designs) and it went well!

@leavt oh nice! Might be that I pivot to doing more architecture and perspective stuff after Mermay, I used to do a lot of location sketching but that was a loooong time ago, and never really did imaginative environments, but I wanna :)

@playinprogress what i love about plants and rocks and stuff is you can just make a vague squigle and it works 😅 unlike a human face or body, something our brain is so hard wired to identify and will see immediately if it's a bit weird, asymmetrical, off proportions etc

@leavt how have your imagination drawing skills developed over time?
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from playinprogress@mastodon.art
@playinprogress i've always been good at imagining landscapes, cityscapes and vegetation and draw it directly with ink, to a point my art teachers clocked me as autistic, my main issue as been humans, animals and vehicles. For the Vehicles it clicked a few years ago when i was gifted How To Draw by Scott Robertson by an ex who liked those drawings (i didn't at the time) and we did the exercises together but didn't realise the benefit until last year when i had a sudden interest of drawing cars

@playinprogress for humans i've always been struggling, i started improving by copying naruto 😅 then it clicked by doing live drawing classes, and in parallel starting my career as a rigging TD and knowing anatomy is an important skill to have, building muscle system in 3D really improved my 2D drawing skills. My latest struggle is faces, i started doing the 100faces challenge like 3 years ago, didn't se the benefits until very recently, it was worth it! it's still super hard though

@playinprogress i still have trouble imagining interesting angles and composition, for this i'm planning to study movie shots or comic panels that i like, if i had money i'll take a storyboard class 😅

@playinprogress abt drawing vehicles, it's funny how learning how to draw them by imagination improved how I draw them by observation (i used to find this very hard), it's the opposite of what usually happens, i might try a similar approach to faces (by learning things like the loomis head maybe)
Sorry for all the long answers it was a very interesting question!

@leavt thank you for explaining! funny enough heads & faces are easy for me, at least since I did a head drawing class a while ago. One year I binged on drawing figures from imagination, but I think I did too much rote practice of them, not enough actually working out my problems/thinking about how I could do them better... so I am better than I used to be but nowhere near as good at it as I want to be. I think I might do more concentrated imagination hand studies next :)

@playinprogress this a great plan tbh i should do that too, drawing more figures from imagination!
