Playing with shadow shapes, again. I like what is happening with some of the graphic simplifications in my chicken heads lately, especially these small ones. The detail view here is no more than 2.5cm wide. This is tiny. But pretty :)

This one also one that deviates more from the reference. Patched together from two different images really, both heavily edited, played with "incorrect" shadows to have that nice clean light edge on the left side.

I've been thinking a lot about the relationship between drawing from reference or life, drawing from imagination, and composition. Mostly I am struck by how many decisions we don't have to make when working from reference, how many choices I don't have to make - I don't have to decide on the pose, or colors, or light direction, or point of view, or the shapes of what I am painting, or the background, or...anything really. I just have to paint.

Part of the reason why using my own photos as ref is more fun is that the poses are much more varied, the lighting more interesting, and I have more small variations of basically the same set up. Would make for bad stock photography, but useful for painting.

number of hours I've worked on it x your hourly wage. If you are on disability or social security you only pay for shipping. If you are unwaged in a different way we'll work something out.
