Toot

Written by Matt Gray on 2025-01-19 at 20:31

Let’s see if I’ve got enough brain to watch this for the first time.

I’m not counting the time it was on a distant CRT in a coach on a 1000+ mile coach journey 20+ years ago.

First impression after 20m:

Everyone’s mumbling and it’s very slow.

(I was expecting it to be slow. I can only watch slow films if I’m ill, so it’s kind of the point)

It’s still going.

They’re still mumbling.

The mumbling is now sometimes in Italian.

It’s still going.

They’re still mumbling.

This is why I don’t watch highly acclaimed films.

@mattgrayyes I found it slow, often poorly acted, mostly poorly directed, and the cinematography often sucked. I never felt motivations of characters were being clearly portrayed, it was just trudging from one scene to the next with little connection.

I would say "well, it's a 50+ year old film", but there are good films from that long ago (i.e. The French Connection).

I'm also told that the original source material (based on a book, right?) was worse.

I then suffered through watching the sequel, which was a bit better, but not by much.

Yeah, I know I'm probably in a minority, given how many people rave about it being one of the greats.

@mattgrayyes I would reccomend 'The Room' for braindead nonsense. But I have a feeling you will have seen it.

@mattgrayyes under no circumstance should you watch The Barber Of Siberia. I think after about 2 hours the first bit of plot started to happen.

I have watched a few odd films in my life, but that was the slowest.

@mattgrayyes this is why i always use / request subtitles

so many movies have this issue where i just cant understand the speakers

part of it is because of my neurodivergency and speech processing issues, but its still so much worse in films compared to real life that there must be another factor

@stella@wetdry.world @mattgrayyes@chaos.social I think it's because they mix the audio weirdly, they make the voices quieter and the background louder, no idea why, it just makes it hard to understand

@mattgrayyes I was a 13 year-old pseudo-intellectual when I rented the whole series one-by-one as a part of "old films are free with new films and you get a free bag of crisps" deal.

I'm still not a real intellectual.
