On one side I am so happy to have a Raspberry Pi Zero 2W to play with. On the other side, updating Raspberry Pi OS takes aaaaaaaages after the first flash.

Update harder damn it, I have things I want to try!!! 😅

@MickInTx

Seeing as you are a fellow NetBird user, if I can ask, you had any luck connecting to a server on your birdNet using an android SSH client or terminal emulator?

Trying something new.

Taking notes for my courses using mkdocs.

The idea being that at the end of the year I have a searchable wiki of notes in static site format.

And should I want to do something else with the notes they are all in plain text / markdown. Well, apart from the diagrams using mermaid.js.

FYI: if you are looking for a good way to track time (freelance work, general time statistics, etc) give TimeTagger a go.

I've been using it for roughly a year now as I've had to provide time sheets for three separate entities.

Started with self hosting, but became a paid subscriber to support the project. Ended up making my own time sheet template and importing the relevant data via CSV.

VERY happy with it.

Brief aside, Netbird is magic. If you need a mesh VPN, get it.

Was a bit worried about the laptop as the screen is broken (hence its new life as a "server") and I haven't booted it for some months.

Had already set the "boot on power" flag in BIOS so plugged it in and the lights came on. Five minutes later I was SSH'd in via Netbird and back to messing around with stuff. Such a brilliant mesh VPN (and fully FOSS, unlike Tailscale). :D

Let me introduce the Super Cra(y|te).

An IKEA Knagglig re-purposed as an easy to move Compute Crate. Two ThinkCenter m920q's (bought refurbished, at half price), and an old laptop. All running Debian 12 and Incus for virtualization.

This what they call Scandinavian Design? 😆

Just need to get the networking side sorted.

Kinda proud and exited. 😀

All in all a good start.

Day 1 of two year cyber security education tomorrow. Not nervous. No no. Do need a new cup for my coffee though, this one keeps shaking and spilling.

Brilliant - southern Norway prepping for heavy winds and snow. With news stories already circulating about vans being blow around and cars driving into ditches.

Related fun fact: today is the first day of 2025 where I have to drive south for Work/Education Thing.

Need to check for blankets and provisions in car. Just in case. Would suck to break down half way down the mountain with nothing but a half eaten banana.

I bought a wifi6 usb dongle for my Raspberey Pi 4 (acting as router in home lab). Need the extra range. Except OpenWrt does not support the one I bought. I thought it did but nope...

Now I need to buy another that is supported and find a use for the one I bought... :/

There is Glaze and Nightshade for poisoning images so LLMs that ingest them despite copyright are affected in a negative way.

Are there any other tools like these, especially for video, audio, or text? Also, there are block lists for LLM agents, but has anyone built a tar pit (think Endlessh for SSH) or poison cloud that known LLM agents can be re-directed to?

Seems to need some heat management, but still could be a great home lab offering at that price!

So our printers WiFi just died. As in it is just gone and no manner of factory resets etc can bring the WiFi capabilities back.

Now looking to get an RPI Zero 2W (after Christmas) and setting up a CUPS server. As it still prints via USB without issues.

Yay! Another project for the pile. xP

10 years ago I bought my current desktop PC. Today I finally got around to installing a WiFi card.

No more having to use an old phone as a USB tether. Feels great. :blobcatreachR:

Benchmarking example:

https://anarc.at/blog/2017-10-26-comparison-cryptographic-keycards/

Seems to show some quite slow times for RSA4096 on the NitroKey Pro - but it is from 2017, so there may have been improvements made in the NK3.

As an added note, the main focus of the threat model here is someone breaking into the machine over the net and stealing the keys out of ~/.ssh/, not a nation state actor going ham.

Question for the #cryptography enthusiasts:

Looking to get a physical token based solution for PGP (strictly email and ssh key use - FIDO2 etc not required). Have narrowed it down to the OpenPGP Smart Card (V3.4) or the Nitrokey 3A Mini. Both are produced in Europe.

Anyone have thoughts about one or the other? Any benchmarks? other pointers?

Not as bad as for "root" though (login disabled).
