Just in case this needs to be said:
I have zero intention of closing down or diminishing our services on toot.wales in any way whatsoever with regards to the UK Online Safety Act.
I am pursuing communications with Ofcom, and will work with both my Tลตt and my IFTAS hats on to ensure decentralised service providers can continue to operate while Ofcom figures out how it plans to regulate Fediverse services. Other advocacy groups are doing the same. If you can, sit tight.

This list of sites closing down is a travesty.

We will all be slowly dragged under the roof of those who can afford to comply -which is not what I think the regulator wants.
The answer to shitty social is not making everyone use it. The answer is building our own.
We have what they are looking for, locally-governed, locally-hosted, community-driven social.
Yes, there are safety concerns. Yes, we are working on it. Let's figure out a way to get our message heard.

@jaz More power to your elbow, but a note of caution: the problem with "sit tight", AIUI, is that the date at which the regulations are likely to come into force is soon enough that preparatory compliance work is needed right now (yes, in advance of the full regulations being published) to have any chance of complying with them.

@only_ohm Ofcom has a "small services" taskforce starting to figure out what they want to say and do. OSA has more teeth than the DSA for sure, but I'm ready to work with Ofcom to walk them through how it all works, how their regulations impact safe spaces, and what activities are underway in the fediverse to meet their trust and safety concerns.
Not the first regulation I've had to deal with, won't be the last.

@jaz I have written a letter to my MP emphasising this. At a time when "big social" is slipping into the control of far-right political interests, the health of the "rest of the web" is absolutely crucial.

@jaz Hello Jazz, I am disappointed to learn that the online safety act is a threat to safe online spaces. Is there something that you could point me to, that would explain how regulation could deal with the dangerous online ecosystems of the oligarchs whilst not damaging safe spaces? Thanks again for all your work on Toot.Wales

@MichaelPalmer I don't have anything to point to, but the EU DSA does a good job of carving out small spaces as long as there's someone to reach regarding harms. OSA's requirements apply more broadly to anything with two or more users.

@jaz Many thanks Jazz

@jaz @MichaelPalmer I think there will be alot of judicial reviews and legal challenges to law while there huge backlash from the public when sites start blocking the UK leading to the UK gov backtracking hard and bringing the law more in line with the EU DSA

Thanks, also I'll follow and hope I can copy your homework :alex_grin:
(I have no idea how fedi works under this framework, I can't fit it into any box that feels right)
