The Black Wood of Rannoch is one of the largest areas of remaining ancient pine forest in Perthshire. It is a living monument, with some trees thought to be about 400 years old. I was lucky to walk through it on a particularly beautiful day.

@kristiedegaris Iโ€™ve always wanted to visit Scotland, so this just adds to the allure. The peace your photo evokes is hard to describe.

@kristiedegaris In the UK, a 400 year old tree in ancient, but a 400 year old building is common. In the US a 400 year old building is ancient, but a 400 year old tree is common.

@deegeese Ha! Very true. There's a tree not far from Rannoch that is between 2000 and 3000 years old. The Fortingall Yew. But sadly, there aren't many of those around.

@kristiedegaris. Yes it is a living monument from trees to lichen. Nature takes a long time to add all the layers of biodiversity. #getoutside, #biodiversity.

@kristiedegaris Was privileged to live in Killiecrankie for one summer in the 1980s and yes, the woods have a timeless quality I havenโ€™t seen elsewhere. I got the sense that the whole ecosystem, especially in the glens and forests, is in no hurry.

@hazelnot today I learned there's a planet called Rannoch in Mass Effect! What's the planet like? Rannoch Moor is pretty otherworldly

@kristiedegaris it's pretty dissimilar tbh ๐Ÿ˜…

It's mostly a desert planet, with vegetation mostly around the oceans and rivers, and apparently there are no insects there and plants rely on larger animals for pollination

Ah, we visited the Three Sisters a couple of months ago. The whole area is quite stunning and, fortunately for us, not too far away so well within range for our EV.

Great shot! ๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ‘
