The Black Wood of Rannoch is one of the largest areas of remaining ancient pine forest in Perthshire. It is a living monument, with some trees thought to be about 400 years old. I was lucky to walk through it on a particularly beautiful day.

When I was taking this photo a guy passed and said 'You missed it!' (referring to a point perceived as the best of the bluebells) to which I smiled and said 'Did I?'.

Good news!

I came to a career late (for many reasons) and it's only now, at 40, that am I really able to focus on it.

Today I got the brilliant news that I have been accepted onto the Women in Journalism Scotland mentorship scheme and have been paired with the amazing Rebecca Smith (author of Rural - The Lives Of The Working Class Countryside) who will be my mentor for the year!

This provides support and structure as I work to get my career properly off the ground.

A lot of the nature writing in my book is also represented in photographs I took. I drew on the photos a lot for inspiration as I wrote.

'I climb higher and a gust of wind lifts my hair and the dark strands dance a reel around my head while the waves move restlessly below. One hand on the stone, I raise my eyes to the horizon: that endless vista towards the Outer Hebrides and then a clear two thousand miles to Newfoundland.'

My kid (a young woman in a heavily male dominated area) designs and builds amazing games (this one is called Slime Tycoon) and tonight, I'm just a Mom in an Ellen Ripley skin, standing in front of giant mushrooms, playing Fortnite for the first time ever.
