Ask yourself why BBC Scotland constantly talk down the achievements of our country and our people and why they go to such lengths to portray us as less than we are. Ask why Scotland is never shown to be a modern, progressive and wealthy place well capable of being a successful independent state. Ask yourself why BBC Scotland never hint that we are being held back by London rule.

The BBC in Scotland. Far from balanced or fair.

@IndyRichard Why does BBC Scotland present a rotisserie of films about rural smallholders and ferries teetering on their last legs?

@christineburns @IndyRichard they can’t possibly present an image of Scotland as an advanced progressive nation. We might get ideas above our station.

@jhavok @IndyRichard I would seriously dispute the label Europe’s poorest nation. After union the English were heard to say they have catched Scotland and would not let her go.

That certainly does not sit true with the epithet of a poor nation.

@peterbrown @IndyRichard The book has accounts of several times where the Scottish almost caught the English. Being ruled by the English had a lot to do with the poverty. Saxons seem to be a bad lot.

@jhavok @IndyRichard the union was brought about by bribery and corruption along with a side serving of intimidation. England wanted Scotland’s commerce on which to raise taxes and they wanted Scotland to share England’s huge National Debt.

The union impoverished Scotland and full recovery took almost 100 years .

In fact, Adam Smith’s Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations was written to try and understand why Scotland’s economy had collapsed so completely and so abruptly.

Not so good when we’re under their control.

@IndyRichard For anyone who doesn't know, after the union of the crowns in 1603 and especially after the Act of Union in 1707, attempts were made to eradicate the very name "Scotland." The country was often officially called "North Britain. Army regiments officially changed their names from "Scots" to "North British." There was a North British Railway and a North British Hotel in Edinburgh. It was an attempt at cultural eradication and suppression, which BBC North Britain continues to this day.

@bodhipaksa @IndyRichard

So is that why the Teenage Fanclub record is called "Songs from Northern Britain"?

I am always very puzzled by BBC Scotland when I visit. The impression to me is that it is made in England with Scottish accents.

@bodhipaksa @IndyRichard An English relative always wrote our address as street, town, county, N.B. but got offended when my father addressed letters to her as S.B. “I live in England!”

@IndyRichard Although we Scots tend towards being modest and self deprecating, the BBC Scotland cabal do tend to be miserable, snarky, negative bastards.

@Dolphinchaz @IndyRichard it’s their job. They have to present Scotland as a nation which can’t, not as a nation which can do.
