Stuck my head into IMDB for the first time in a while and maybe I'm just paranoid but I think there's a pervasive LLM stench in the reviews.

@timbray Interesting. And, of course, deeply troubling. I don't read a lot of IMDB reviews, I use it mostly for cast lookups, but still.

@timbray I'm still grieving for when it was the Cardiff Internet Movie Database run from the dept I was an undergrad at!

@timbray It's been years since IMDB had any information I wanted that wasn't easier to get from Wikipedia. I use the uBlacklist extension to block IMDB from my search results. https://iorate.github.io/ublacklist/docs

@jwz @timbray I like themoviedb.org. They seem to be the closest that tv and movies have to a musicbrainz (though I will keep hollering that metabrainz needs a "screenbrainz" for movies tv and games.

@xarph @jwz @timbray Callsheet is a nice app built on top of their API https://apps.apple.com/us/app/callsheet-find-cast-crew/id1672356376

@jwz @timbray

Many, many years ago you could download the Internet Movie Database to your local #Amiga from Aminet. They would post regular diffs to keep you up to date.

(IIRC this was culled from rec.movies or whatever, but it’s been a while.)

I never had a big enough HDD to make it feasible (nor a fast enough connection), but so long as you don’t need any movie newer than ~2003, you can still download everything: https://www.aminet.net/misc/imdb

@timbray FWIW if you’re on iOS in this case, there’s an app called Callsheet that is free, insanely fast, and doesn’t have all the IMDB nonsense. Oh and it helps navigate the streaming nightmare ecosystem.
