Remember the movies during the Red Scare and the Cold War where we were terrified of foreign adversaries taking control of the government by getting a cartoonishly unbelievable obvious villain elected? And then we looked back at those times and laughed and laughed.

Everyone who has ever given a speech without “accidentally” giving a Nazi salute, raise your hand.

No, not like that.

I’m (slightly) less bothered by the new leadership in this country than I am by how we chose this.

This wasn’t imposed upon us from without. We chose this, either actively or through inaction, because of hate, fear, greed, indifference, ignorance, and a childlike desire for simple and easy solutions in a complex and difficult world.

Let them among us who hasn’t gotten drunk and destroyed all the stars and then sent their son on a dung-beetle-inspired quest to roll up huge balls of garbage to fix their shit while they’re hungover cast the first stone.

Biden issued preemptive pardons to Anthony Fauci and the members of the Jan 6th investigation panel, not because they did anything wrong, but to shield them from any politically motivated charges in the next administration.

That was good.

A popular web app we use at work has just updated its UI.

I gotta ask, what is with the trend of making UI elements flat and indistinguishable? Like, why are there no borders around things? Why are buttons just text?

My wife, Biscuit T. #Dog , and I were in the spare room. I was playing with Biscuit on the floor.

Wife: Okay, out! I gotta study.

Me (jokingly): C’mon Biscuit. At least you want to be with me.

Biscuit: jumps up on couch next to wife

😐

Hello Vectex my old friend

I’ve come to play with you again

Because a beam was softly creeping

Left its glow while it was sweeping

And the vision that was planted on the plane

Still remains

With the phosphor burn-in

This is the book that, thanks to some sleuthing by @GeoffWozniak , we know Brian Kernighan thinks is the worst C #programming book.

I almost bought it, but instead I put it back and washed my hands.

It’s going to be 35 degrees Fahrenheit (1.6 degrees C) with a wind chill of 19.

They have not canceled soccer practice for 10yo. Should we go?

(We’re not going, but I’m curious if it’s normal for children’s soccer practice to happen in this kind of weather. Are we just being decadent parents?)

13yo walked to the donut shop this morning to have some tea and study kanji.

I met him on the way back while walking the dog.

13yo: I had a delicious breakfast taco.

Me: Excellent.

13yo: And I bought a maple donut for $BROTHER.

Me: That was nice of you.

13yo: But then I ate it.

Me: Ugh, this might be the heaviest I’ve ever been.

Wife: I mean, I’m not officially overweight, but I think I’m at my heaviest too, excluding pregnancy.

Me: Honey…I think I’m pregnant.

My sister is a #SpecialEducation teacher.

Her principal is upset with her because she isn’t teaching the “5th grade TEKS” (TEKS being a Texas standardized test thing) to students who can’t add single-digit numbers and have to be walked to class because they can’t otherwise find it.

My sister tries to teach them what they can learn, but has been told she is to teach the TEKS for the grade level and nothing else, regardless of whether the children understand it.

The force with which “AI” is being shoved into every single product is amazing. It’s almost as if there were an intelligence behind it, pushing itself via relatively innocuous means.

In other words, if there were a malign, rogue general AI trying to take over the world, this is about how it would do it I think.

[#]ProtonMail doesn't support grabbing your email via IMAP from another service (there is a desktop gateway for paid users).

They do have an export tool (https://proton.me/support/proton-mail-export-tool) but it spits out a bunch of .eml files with JSON metadata.

I wrote a quick script to convert such an export into a classic mbox file, which should be suitable for importing into, say, #Fastmail

Anyway, the script is here:

(I wrote the script in like 5 minutes, don't judge me.)
