Beeper is "a universal messaging app that lets you chat with anyone on any chat app, including WhatsApp, iMessage, Telegram and 12 other networks"
It was acquired by Automattic https://blog.beeper.com/2024/04/09/beeper-is-joining-automattic/
Since I don't know that company, I'll #askfedi : Are these people 3 techbros in a trenchcoat? are they alright? will they feed me to an AI or blockchain me to some bullshit?
I'd really, really like to use Whatsapp as little as possible. Thank you

@enriquericos see https://h-i.social/@are0h/113804640085061767 - they're the ones doing the whole petty wordpress saga that I don't know if you know about

@welshpixie @enriquericos And Beeper itself is basically a bunch of bridges on the Matrix protocol, most of these being open source. It's the whole runnin and packaging those in one app that behaves nicely part that they sell.

@enriquericos Automattic are currently in the middle of a controversy regarding WPEngine well summarised here:

@enriquericos Automattic is the primary vendor of - and is run by the original author of - the Wordpress blogging platform. The company has been around for 20 years, during which time it has been largely stable and reliable. They also provide ancillary services - Gravatar (a free avatar hosting service), Akismet (a spam-filtering service), and others.

@enriquericos Within the last few years, Automattic has been on a buying binge. Meanwhile, Matt Mullenweg (Automattic's CEO) has become increasingly unstable, culminating in a very public and very inexplicable feud with WPEngine, a company that also sells Wordpress (as allowed under the product's licensing terms).

@enriquericos There has been a trend with some of their acquisitions to find ways to make them More Wordpress-Like. Tumblr, for example, was acquired from Yahoo in 2019; in 2024, Tumblr announced that they will be moving their backend to Wordpress (https://www.theverge.com/2024/8/28/24230587/tumblr-move-blogs-wordpress-automattic), a move which has not gone over well with Tumblr's users and customers.

@enriquericos I have no horse in this race with respect to Beeper; from a distance, I would expect it to continue to operate as it has done for the immediate future, and for the medium future to be less predictable than you'd probably like.

@owen I'm still reading links, but damn, this is way more absurd than I thought it was going to be. Thanks a bunch for your summary.

@enriquericos Very welcome! It's a really neat bit of internet corporate history because they're one of the few businesses in this area that has been around and relatively stable for such a long time, neither exiting, failing, nor going whole-hog on unlimited growth. Then, in the last few years, that changed!

@owen @enriquericos big “and then the fire nation” vibes to the last couple years with them, yeah.

@enriquericos I've been using Beeper since before they were acquired by Automatic, and I've been happy with it. I do use it for Whatsapp specifically. Their business plan is to provide basic features for free, with a paid "pro" tier in the future.

@ted @enriquericos good Android app, awful Windows app

@Madmonkey @enriquericos yeah, they have a new desktop app in the works and I don't know why they don't just ship it. Can't be worse than the desktop app now. It is feeling really old at this point.

@ted @Madmonkey After reading half the drama surrounding that company, I decided against trusting them.
Take a look at the replies I got, it's... I don't know, I'm very disillusioned with technology these days.

@ted @Madmonkey I just read that you're an Inkscape co-founder! Inkscape is force for good, thank you.

@enriquericos @Madmonkey I get that, Automatic has been doing some weird stuff lately. I haven't seen them do anything user hostile yet, but their behavior has become more erratic than I'd like.

@ted @Madmonkey "Yet" being the key word here, it looks that sooner or later I would regret trusting them. Not that I trust WhatsApp, I just need to use it, but I'd rather add tools I really enjoy and support.
BTW, I'm following and rooting for Inkscape's CMYK development, I'm really hoping it'll allow a lot of print graphic designers (we still exist) to finally ditch Adobe and even switch to Linux.

@enriquericos @Madmonkey awesome, there are quite a few. You should follow @doctormo as he is the one primarily working on that.

@enriquericos
They want basically full access to your Google account so that's a 'No Thanks' from me.
Uninstalled five minutes after installation and if they aren't being run by three tech bros in a trench coat I'll be shocked and surprised.
