@actuallyautistic
Just watched the first two episodes of Patience, the English version of Astrid, murder in Paris. And I'm going to have to go with, colour me interested.
I loved Astrid, it's depiction of autism and the characters and their development. As a crime show, it wasn't always that great. But, as a showcase for how we can be and how we often fit into the world, it was brilliant.
In terms, so far at least, of the British show.
It's slightly annoying that they seem to be relying so much on the original show and especially its stories. However, they do seem to be going about telling them in a different enough way, for that not to be a dealbreaker. There's also enough hints that they might be taking the characters, especially the secondary characters, into other and perhaps just as interesting arks.
Patience is being betrayed far more as a heavier masked autistic, than the French version. But that, to me, seems fair and perhaps slightly more realistic for a woman in her position, especially as they have changed the role of her guardian.
They are still being as sympathetic and in some ways as up to date with how we see autism as Astrid was. I especially loved the way as a child she was diagnosed. But also in the difficulties, see the lift scene in the first episode, I found it so true and hilarious, and the ways she is coping.
I will certainly continue watching it and I am not without hope for it. Although, the original will certainly take some beating.
For those interested and who can access British tv, it is on channel 4.

@pathfinder @actuallyautistic Thank you! I loved Astrid and will now find a way to watch Patience. I may have to wait for it to make it to Brit Box or Acorn, but I will find it. π

Hopefully it won't end up disappointing. Astrid is such a brilliant show, it would be nice to see one as good, but in its own way.
However though, it's just wonderful to see main stream TV that potrays us so well. The more of this the merrier. The benefits of it, for those wondering if they are and finally seeing realistic representation, as well as just seeing it ourselves, can't be underestimated.

@pathfinder @actuallyautistic Iβve my fingers crossed that the Brits to as good a job as the French, while giving us some different stories and takes. But Astrid is going to be hard to best, thatβs for sure.

@pathfinder @actuallyautistic thank you. We too love Astrid and had guessed this was the UK version. I was a bit reluctant to try it but will watch it now. (I am not autistic but my grandson is)

Yes, same for us; for now we're giving to the benefit of the doubt...
What I loved about the original (Astrid) was that while it purported to be a crime show (no doubt to get the backing), both series where really focussed on the negotiation between neuro-divergent & 'normal' people to find a way to get the best out of both - the crimes where merely a vehicle for a much more interesting social drama - as yet (one episode in) Patience hasn't angered that (yet!)

Thanks for this, Kevin. I wasn't going to watch it but you encouraged me to give it a try. Glad I did. I thought it was a good progression from Astrid, of which my objection was its somewhat cutesy treatment of the relationships (which was probably a development from the character in Incredible Attorney Woo). I thought Patience was much more direct and highlighted more the difficulties we face engaging with NTs and with their need for us to change our behaviour.

It's certainly seems more subtle than Astrid and taking it's time over developing the relationships in a more realistic way.
I also love the direction they seem to be taking with the detective's son. Hinted at in Astrid, but never developed.

@pathfinder @actuallyautistic I had not heard of Astrid, but spotted Patience on 4 and now 2 episodes in.
Its very well done. I understand that in film and tv, situations are 'compressed' for purposes of storytelling etc. If this was real life, I would be a bit annoyed at the speed with which the lead detective inserts herself into Patience's life. However I think the stigma, and the way people generalise 'different' by justifying opinions regardless of results is shown very well. I am hopeful for the rest of the show, and to see how the show manage the NT approach to their learning journey. Also very thankful for the highlighting Kevin!

The first three series of Astrid are also available on C4, if you fancy the comparison.

@pathfinder @actuallyautistic Another thing the program brought up was in a conversation with my wife over what my special interest/obsessive collection is. I don't have any. I know what I am like, and I obsessively avoid collecting things. I think it's a hangover from long time masking. I do see my kids forming special interests (1 diagnosed, 1 in process) and I encourage where possible. I wonder if I am obsessing 'by proxy'. Either way, it made sense, and made me feel sad at how I have supressed my interests so long they feel a bit distant.

Not all of us have special interests. Equally sometimes your special interest may well involve what you consider normal. Like work or driving or even something about your family life.

@pathfinder @actuallyautistic thats probably true! When I was diagnosed, my lack of a defined collecting obsession etc. Was mentioned quite a lot. Hopefully things are moving on in the 7 years since

When I was a kid I filled my room with Mad Magazine jokes taped to all the walls. Never read them again.
I carted around 6 4 cubic foot boxes of Sci Fi paperbacks. Never read them again.
My main special interest is "new technology". This has served me well for many careers. It still provides hours of "squirreling", as in "oh look, squirrel". And yes, wildlife is a special interest.

@pathfinder @actuallyautistic Thanks! So many people praised Astrid that I wanted to see it so badly. But here in Germany it's not available on any streaming platform. Probably, because there's no German version π
Finally, I've gotten the box with the first 4 seasons as a French import. Right now I'm at the beginning of season 3 and I like it very much. Wish I could show it to people, but it needs a German version first π
Will definitely look into Patience - thanks for the recommendation.
