Is allstar basically a echolink hotspot that I can control with my HT using DTMF tones?

@k3fnb nope.

Allstar is a telephone exchange for amateur radio, which is unsurprising, since it's based on the open source PABX software Asterisk.

Nodes can connect to each other across the internet and audio can travel across those connections. You can connect a node to a radio and have the audio available on RF.

You can transmit DTMF commands to control a node, or use a telephone or webpage.

It's completely distributed, no central server, unlike Echolink.

@vk6flab @k3fnb and one of the side benefits of that difference is the audio on Allstar sounds way better than echolink, for those who care about such things (me not so much)
