Toot

Written by Sy Hoekstra on 2025-01-06 at 17:35

Being #blind is fun. Just encountered a visual captcha with no audio option. So I used JAWS Picture Smart to get AI to read me the text of the visual clue, which I typed in and got through. So basically I'm a human who needs a robot to prove to another robot that I am not a robot. Without my robot, the other robot would have thought I was a robot. Also I was trying to make a payment on my PAP machine, which really should in itself indicate that I am not a robot. #Disability #Disabled

@SyHoekstra @chloeraccoon @patterfloof @GGMcBG It may be somewhat the remnants of SOME British imperialism, but it is not British Imperialism, it is more the flow and spread of language after immigration and settlers became established. It is not the same as say, the English language in Ireland, or in many other places that were invaded.

It is not the same as in Australia for instance where they tried to destroy the native language and forced English to be spoken and read in schools.

@SyHoekstra @chloeraccoon @patterfloof @GGMcBG I'm just pointing out that there's a slight difference when the majority of people in a place are decended from immigrants and speak an imported and evolving language after cutting ties with the empire from where that language originated. It may be a remnant of British Imperialism, but it is not quite actually representative of it.

Different case in India, Hong Kong, Ireland for example.

Back in the Days when I was Teenager, there was another way of specialized writing names called "LEET Speak" referring to "Elite speak" with lots of Numbers in every Word as replacement for a somewhat similar Character. (I purposely excluded the numbers in this explanation!)

That must have been wild times for people being blind.

@SyHoekstra @Beldarak Indeed that’s the hope your story gave me. I have refused to solve CAPTCHAs for over a decade now. Can’t wait for the day when browsers simply defeat the CAPTCHA for you.

It was disturbing to find that the #ImageMagick support forum has a policy to refuse to help people trying to use IM to solve #CAPTCHA. They don’t understand that the CAPTCHAs themselves are the problem, blinded by the false idea that anti-robot is somehow pro-human.

Those captchas need to die. It was a stupid idea in the first place, and now AI is better at them than we are, so they've become completely pointless.

I try to avoid most sites using them, but some sites that really don't need them, still use them. Like webshops. If you make it hard for me to spend my money, I'll spend it elsewhere. But sometimes a site you absolutely need still uses one, and then what?
