Today’s 3 Good Things:
Caught up on sleep this morning and broke a new habit of waking up 3 hours too early. This will have saved my day today and may even some of the rest of the week too.
Tackled an epic problem in my coding and found what looks like an elegant solution. Didn’t expect the problem to occur, and then never thought I’d solve it!
Working on coursework while still enjoying it and having a sense of humour. This wasn’t possible full-time. I was burned out by now, just 2-3 months in.

Today’s 3 Good Things:
Still making progress with coursework. Sometimes that’s the best outcome. Yes, I’d love to miraculously finish it all in one go, but at least…
…I am also enjoying my coursework! That’s not something people often experience, let alone say! This course format clearly works well for me, and the course itself!
Not only am I still in some denial about having graduated with an undergrad degree a few months ago (looking at my certificate again helped!), but also about having a scholarship for my Masters degree. Wowzers. It part-funds the tuition fee and is life-changing. Never had one before. I’m very lucky. And speechless. Still.

Blue skies this morning. 🌅
Got holiday cards written. And found enough leftover stamps from ones I bought last year to cover the ones that will be posted this year. Good job, as the price of stamps now here in the UK is wild!
Got out for a walk yesterday.

Doing this post even though I absolutely do not want to today. But I have kept this up daily since Mr Idiot won the US election and it has kept me [more] stable since then.
The birds in the garden and the regular squirrel visitor. They distract me in the best ways.

A quiet day today, in many ways.
Listening to birds, even from inside the house: a collared dove, some long-tailed tits, a blackbird. So glad wild birds exist.
My partner. He’s always on this list in subtle ways, even when I don’t mention him outright. He’s part of many of the stories and wonders I list that keep me going. 💗

Have a wonderful plan to rebuild my walking fitness.
Also have a plan to visit my university for the first time! As a distance learner I have no need to visit, so this is purely for fun, no obligations. Rebuilding my walking fitness is going to be very wise for this trip, so I can walk freely around and explore, hopefully with fewer ME/CFS repercussions.

So glad to have had an assessment appointment for disability supports. The people who do these assessments are some of the loveliest people and are doing life changing work. Managed to do some coursework, despite feeling very distracted. Reminded myself that I’m aiming for my version of “good enough”. It’s still a relatively high standard but it’s not necessarily going to be the same as other people’s.

Today’s 3 Good Things:
A beautiful frosty landscape this morning with blue and salmon pink morning skies.
Watching livestreams of wildlife on YouTube is wonderful! Love our back yard friends, but love learning about even more wildlife that way. Livestreams of wildlife is one of the best ways to truly learn about wildlife. No carefully curated sensational clips like TV documentaries, just real wildlife doing their real stuff. And usually inadvertently being hilarious, too! (I’ll link to a great YouTube channel below.)
Hope. I recently got a top up of hope by realising the majority of people I’m connected with here feel the same way about several prominent world leaders. We all continue to do what we can to make the world a better place, regardless.

Today’s 3 Good Things:
A little late to do this today as I’ve had such an incredible response on here to a request I had for recommendations. Gradually working through the many responses, not wanting to rush. If you’re one of those who helped: thank you! 🙏
I try to practice gratitude in multiple forms, especially in a way that helps share the good vibes with others. (Gratitude has helped me re-find my balance and not give in to anxiety about the future since Mr Numpty won the US election in Nov.) Today I sent off an email praising a member of staff who excelled in her work helping me with disability supports. I’m hoping it not only helps her start her year off right but also helps set a good vibe in her work environment. These people do so much good and rarely get ANY public recognition at all.
My affinity for coding in Python is growing. I’m glad to be learning a coding language that can be used in many different projects. Had experience with a fair few languages, but I’ll be using this one more than most in my course, so it’s a good thing I’m getting along well with it! I usually learn new coding languages “on the job” so learning via a course and getting feedback only via coursework is different, the feedback and rewards take longer to come, but it’s going okay. 👍

Today’s 3 Good Things:
My experience getting sick (= regular sickness from a chronic illness with no end in sight) these days is much less traumatic than it was; not necessarily because the sickness itself is easier but because of love, support and acceptance from around me and slowly cultivated from within, too. The reduction in stress because of this means I probably recover from crashes quicker and generally experience less anxiety and fear of crashes. Has been LONG road to get here and I can only see the difference when looking back at scales of 5+ years. Never thought it would be possible to be grateful for something related to such life-altering challenges.
A walk in the magical icicle kingdom yesterday. It was beautiful (photo attached) with lots of fluffy ponies, floofed-up birds, plus incredible colour gradients in the skies.

Hearing the characterful whistles, rattles and unique playful calls from starlings (birds) nearby. They are brilliant at mimicking anthropogenic sounds and even other birds! I once thought I heard 4 bird species in quick succession outside the window including a raptor (unusual!) and then realised it was just a little flock of starlings, probably showing off their talents and impressing their pals! 😆
Looking forward to using the heating less as the long series of hard frosts subsides here.

Had a leap forward in some coding coursework. Finally realised something that should have been rather obvious to say the least!
I don’t have anyone to talk to about coding who is a coder, and that’s how it’s been most of my life as even some toxic workplaces had a “no talking” rule (yep, I know…)… but I’m glad my partner can keep up with my ramblings now! Waking up to a mixture of collared dove calls and starling chatter, followed by my local house sparrow “host” (the group) chirping incessantly to reestablish their social hierarchy. The great tits are now calling their mating calls, too. Robins defending their territories. It might only be January and still winter, but it’s a very busy world out there for the birds already!
Still keeping up the walking and simple body weight strength exercises. Gently does it. All seems to be going ok!
Accidentally making some coding much more robust. 🤣 Was debugging something else and ended up adding much improved code elsewhere. I learned a lot about how to write that improved code, too. Dyed the ends of my hair blue (a greeny-blue) and it looks surprisingly good! Would look terrible on me if I had dyed the full lengths of my hair, but the colour contrast seems to work well. Yay! Very happy as I gave myself the goal of dying my hair an unnatural colour after I graduated. My hair is too fine to risk harsh colour treatments without it breaking off, and most colours don’t even suit me. So, this kind of meets that goal, even if it’s only CurlSmith’s wash out-able “hair makeup”!

Norman Thelwell (1923 - 2004) and his brilliant drawings of mischievous ponies that I adored as a kid, and his book on a different topic, “Effluent Society” that I just got a copy of. Even in the 70s he saw human’s impact on the environment that many others didn’t see.

@Beedazzled @moonrabbit I thought they weren’t very bright either… until they outwitted all my deterrents for them on my bird feeders! They are almost as crafty as the squirrels! Over weeks and months they figured out some of the trickiest moves to get to the food. And they even remember their tactics after the feeder has been stashed away for a year! Darn it! 😅😅😅
(My plan is to let the small birds eat directly from the feeders and encourage the pigeons to do the clean up since the small birds fling food everywhere anyway! That way everyone gets some food. But if the pigeons get there first, they guzzle it all so quickly noone else gets a look in!)

@Beedazzled @moonrabbit This was a window feeder - rather than a hanging one. Never had one on a hanging feeder either. They slid off the roof of the feeder that even had an addition bar across it underneath to stop big birds, but then grabbed onto the tray with their feet while flapping and gradually falling backwards…. But then they’d gobble huge mouthfuls while they gradually fell off completely… and repeat.
Zero elegance, but impressive success rate!! 😅
