@elaterite It's part of ESO's Very Large Telescope in Chile, which actually comprises several telescopes: four 8 m Unit Telescopes and four smaller 1.8 m Auxiliary Telescopes. The one in this image is an AT. The ATs can be moved along rails and arranged in different configurations. They all point at the same target, and their light is combined via interferometry to achieve a very fine resolution. https://www.eso.org/public/teles-instr/paranal-observatory/vlt/auxiliarytelescopes/
