With Barad-dûr now done, my dad's next #woodworking project is Minas Tirith — the whole thing! This is the king's hall, which is about 15 cm tall and can give you an idea of the sheer size and level of detail that the entire city will have when it's finished. #lotr #MastoArt #fantasy

Re: Uranus, given its apparent magnitude of ~5.7 you might be able to spot it by eye from a very, very dark location if you know exactly where it is, but just barely. Even if its within your magnitude limit, crowding of stars with similar brightness will make it hard to pinpoint it. Binoculars or a telescope will definitely help.

Lovely conjunction between the #Moon and Venus after #sunset! Saturn, Jupiter and Mars are also visible at the same time. Uranus is up there too, but it's not visible without a telescope. (EDIT: Neptune too, close to Saturn)

If you're in a dark enough location to see the #MilkyWay, this is a nice chance to notice that the plane of our Solar System is inclined about 60º with respect to the disc of the Milky Way.

Tired of #NewYear celebrations? It could be worse: on Mercury you'd have to celebrate it twice per day!

After one orbit around the Sun, Mercury has rotated 1.5 times around its axis (relative to distant stars). So it takes another orbit for the Sun to be back again at the same position on the sky. One solar day --> two Mercury years!

One day I won't be startled anymore by the "say" command I added to my script to let me know when it's finished.

Going through some old pics and yeah, I had some dope views of the Andes from my balcony back when I lived in #Chile 🤩 I never got tired of seeing El Plomo bathed in the golden #sunset light.

Among my #holiday #reading I've decided to re-read 'Gotham Central', my favourite #Batman #comic which is a bit ironic given that he barely appears. If you don't like superhero #comics but wish you did, if you enjoy noir detective stories, or if you're a Batman fan but this somehow fell under your radar, go check it out! Or anything else written by Ed Brubaker, really.

Just finished reading it. Am I alone in thinking that the ending felt rushed and uneventfully easy?

Maybe I'm just biased because I recently saw 'Ripley', which I loved except for a few things here and there. With the book I often felt there was more luck than talent involved, although I guess the same can be said of the show in certain scenes.

Are the other books in the series worth it?

Happy #solstice! Today the Sun reached its southernmost point in the sky. If you want to learn about the Sun's yearly motion using a cool photographic technique, check out this thread I wrote 👇

Joking aside: if you ever spot something weird in the sky there are many tools out there to help you identify them: Stellarium for stars and planets, Heavens Above for satellites, Flight Radar for planes...

Also, an object's apparent size, its intrinsic size and its distance are all entangled! Same with its apparent speed, which also depends on the viewing angle.

Astronomers take an exquisitely sharp image of a black hole's shadow with an Earth-sized network of radio-telescopes. The internet: lol so fuzzy.

Some guy posts what's clearly an out-of-focus image of a bright star or planet. The internet: OMG THAT'S CLEARLY A DRONE WE'RE BEING ATTACKED

3/ Addendum: if you want to compare how astronomical objects look at optical vs infrared wavelengths, over the years we've made several interactive comparisons like these:

2/ VIRCAM was recently decommissioned as it will be soon replaced by 4MOST, an instrument that will take spectra of ~2400 objects spread over a wide area in one go, which means tens of millions of spectra over several years!

VIRCAM's data have a huge legacy value, and 4MOST will change so many fields. Before I switched to #scicomm I was lucky to serve as VIRCAM Instrument Scientist for a while, and also help a bit with 4MOST, so I'm happy about the past and excited for what's coming up!

1/ Happy 15th birthday, VISTA! The Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy, located at Paranal Observatory in #Chile, has been tirelessly mapping huge areas of the sky at infrared wavelengths. Its camera VIRCAM has captured stunning infrared vistas (see what I did there?) of our galaxy and beyond such as these: https://www.eso.org/public/images/archive/search/?facility=30
