No, not Switzerland and the Alps, just the old Mt. Whitney Fish Hatchery and the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range (4/30/2023). (The building, I read, is actually built in the English Tutor Revival style. It looks a bit Swiss chalet, no? Maybe it's the mountain that makes it look like that to me?)

I guess if you're gonna have an earworm stuck in your head it's not a horrible thing if it's Heart's Ann Wilson singing Straight On. But 5-6 hours of it, I don't think I ever need to hear that song again...

@thomasmozu Welcome to the fediverse, Thomas! I recommend that you post a few photos and about other things that interest you, and after that, post a hashtagged detailed introduction. If you hashtag the word 'introduction' then people who follow that hashtag will boost your post. Then, with your timeline already filled out with your work and things that interest you, when people visit they can see what you are all about. Also, please consider using alt-text for our low-sighted and blind friends.

In the past I've briefly looked at Signal for a messaging alternative. Because I've been seeing people talk a lot about Signal again recently, I looked again. It appears, as it did the last time I looked, that you can't receive or send messages to users outside of Signal, is that correct? If so, what is a good alternative to Google's messenger? I'm not too concerned about security, but am interested in using software developed & maintained outside of the US.

Old headframe at the Alabama-Mohawk Gold Mine (c.1930s?) in the Alabama Hills, Lone Pine, California. The snow covered Eastern Sierra, including Mt. Whitney at 4,421m (14,505ft), are seen in the distance. Mt. Whitney peak is the right "saw tooth" seen over the center right part of the headframe. If you trace a straight line up from the top of the left side of the diagonal broad on the headframe that's Whitney peak.

Welp, @BobHorowitz 's post of a nice silhouette photo at Ft Point, San Francisco, & @ambivalena 's comment that at first she thought it was a shot of a holocaust watchtower, reminded me that in 2023 I took my Japanese-American boss at the art store / framing shop I work at down to the annual Manzanar Pilgrimage at the WWII era prison camp for Japanese-Americans in the Eastern Sierra of California. Here we see Frankie cutting her way out. @georgetakei

Ruins and more ruins. This one is high up on a cliff where the way up has long since eroded away. (Canyon country, SE Utah, 2020.)

I'd like to title this photo but I'm at a loss for words. This is a cliff ruin in Utah's canyon country. This was photographed from the inside of the ruin looking out. Clearly, the wall is cracked. Most of the sandstone shaped "bricks" are still covered in adobe mud. That's right, all of those marks in the mud are 800 to 1000-year-old finger print smears.

I'm old & have one longtime friend left. He lives a few hundred miles away but we talk on the phone often. Sadly, several years ago he tumbled down the disinformation, culture war for-profit, outrage media rabbit hole. A long time ago we agreed not to talk politics. He has rheumatoid arthritis that he believes was caused by the COVID vaccine. Today, I found out he is getting his medical advice from Meta's AI app, whatever that is. Jesus fucking christ, we're so fucked. @mcnado

Always fun romping around in the canyon country of SE Utah. You never know what secrets (well, they use to be secrets) one might find.

Fannette Island in Emerald Bay, Lake Tahoe, California side (5/15/2016). Fannette Island is the only island in alpine Lake Tahoe. Lora Josephine Knight, former owner of Vikingsholm at the head of the Bay, paid for a small "tea house" to be built on the island (c. 1929). The ruin of the tea house can be seen in the photo as the small white dot at the top of the island.

Hm, it would seem there's a lot of new photographers suddenly appearing in the fediverse. I assume they are escapees from the culture war for-profit social media sites? Whatever the case, thanks for joining the community, folks! And thanks for beautifying my feed with your work!

Referring back to the last several photos I posted of the ghost town of Berlin, Nevada, the area is officially known as: "Berlin-Ichthyosaur State Park." So it is both a mining camp ghost town and it has prehistoric monsters! And yes, that representation of an ichthyosaur on the wall in the second photo is life size! (Photos: 1/24/2025.)
