Decided to finally try switching to Krita for all my daily image-editing tasks since I happened to not have Photoshop running today, annnd the very first one caused Krita to freeze. Cool.

Edit: Apparently this was fixed in the patch release immediately after, and shouldn't affect more recent versions :D

What I did:

Both freeze, though Discord eventually recovers.

Toot

Second time around, I saved the arranged and flattened image before trying to copy+paste it. Third time around, I opened this saved image, and still pasting it causes a freeze.

Fourth time around, I sketched a simple image in Krita instead of using third-party image data. Still freezes.

In all cases, Discord does get an "image" but the thumbnail is empty and it's not able to send the image ("something went wrong", quality error message, Discord).

@eishiya excellent first impression, I must say 8-P

I'm curious if saving/exporting the image to disk as JPEG or PNG works? Or any attempt at exfiltrating data from Krita freezes it?

(Also, assuming this is Krita 5.2.6? On Windows?)

@oblomov Saving as a PNG and sending that works fine. It's just copy+paste that's messed up.

Windows, 5.1.0 - not the most recent, but mature enough that if this were a common issue, you'd think it's have been fixed by then.

I'd test a more recent version, but I can't be bothered to download it since I'm still waiting on WIP features xP

@eishiya maybe the bug was introduced specifically in that version and fixed at the next minor/patch release.

I found this bug report

https://krita-artists.org/t/copy-paste-krita-freezes/47927

and it does mention an “infrequent” (not for you apparently 8-D) copy/paste freeze that was sorry fixed in … drumroll

5.1.1

So it does look like you have the unlucky version after all!

@oblomov Thanks for looking into it! Figures I'd upgrade to a cursed version and then leave it 🤣

@eishiya you're welcome, I appreciate your effort to move to FLOSS and I'm glad this particular obstacle can be overcome 8-)

@eishiya pasting from art programs usually directly copies raw bitmap data into the clipboard (an array of pixels)

Krita clipboarding is probably designed for Krita-to-Krita pasting, and I believe I read somewhere in the distant past that its canvases are always 32 bit regardless of the document bit depth (a JPEG is 8 bits)

Discord is likely polling Windows' clipboard, saying 'yay I can deal with a bitmap', getting a 32 bit image and shitting its pants because it has no encoder to bake it down

@qxoko That was my first thought, but then why would Krita freeze?

@eishiya @qxoko

It might be that there's something going wrong with us un-referencing the data we're sending to the clipboard. If it still happens in latest stable, please send a bug report to bugs.kde.org.

(Krita's rasterdata is always in layer bitdepth, btw, do that's 8bit 90% of the time)

(Btw2: I'm sorry, I'm still not done with the text tool. Currently taking a break from getting my butt handed to me by font-file handling)

@Wolthera Please don't apologise for not doing a lot of work quickly enough for one asshole on the Internet! I bring the text tools not being done not to shame you and others into doing it quicker, but as an excuse for not moving yet ;D
