the painting app cometh

one of the things that's hard to convey through video capture is just how smooth this actually is... it's so clean

I did this just before Christmas, but I'm rebuilding some large parts of it, including getting off of SDL3's SDL_GPU (which I have decided I hate) in favour of directly working in Vulkan/Metal (which I also hate) which will give me more control in future

anyway, this is by far the hardest thing I've ever built and it's wild how unimpressive it looks lmao

I love full-width websites, I love fixed width websites. I love flex galleries and I love grid galleries. I love plain websites and colourful websites. I love cool skeuomorphic design elements and I love plain, bog-standard webpages. I love clever and loose tag-based navigation and I love organised and well-defined hierarchies. I love painterly graphic elements and I love hard-edged vector elements

in short, my website can't be done because it will always want to be something else

I think the reason this film has gone over so 'unexpectedly' well is that movie people who've never played games are getting struck by that feeling for the first time and it's mindblowing to them

it's a piece of non-interactive media that delivers a vibe usually only conveyed through interaction and active participation and that is a massive and novel surprise to hollywood

of course it's stunning and beautiful and amazing for a small team, but I also think they've done something... fascinating

I think it's partly the design and style of the world you see in the film, but also that feeling that usually only a game can capture — there is a whole vibe to exploring and discovering a world without the intrusion of dialogue or distraction, basking in the sights and sounds of a place you can never really go

it's the first film, possibly aside from Miyazaki's Castle in the Sky, that's given me that feeling you get from playing a Fumito Ueda game... maybe BotW as well, and a few others

finally saw Flow (2024) tonight

I don't know quite how to describe it... so the creative team behind it are my age, and I really got the vibe that they spent their teens and twenties playing the same beautiful, atmosphere-drenched (often indie) games that I did, and wanted to see if they could capture the way those games made you feel as a film

and they kinda nail it

to be clear: I want and am working on facsimiles of physical mediums in my painting app, but I'm not sure I've ever seen the value in going as far as Rebelle's wet-media simulation when we have wet media at home that's always going to look better than anything I would spend months (probably years) working on

I was going to post asking about whether artists care really strongly about hyper-real brush simulation à la Rebelle because I never see anyone talking about that kind of thing, and then I saw a post where someone was praising the watercolours in it so I don't know what to think anymore

my position has always been that if 'hyper-realistic watercolour simulation that's so good it looks real' is important to you as an artist, you should just use actual watercolours

we gotta make more things that are so unapologetically queer that they can't be edited out for Chinese distribution

archiving a wordpress webpage and the actual horrorshow of dependencies a standard wget pulls in holy shit

does anyone know of a (command-line preferably) tool that will just grab a 'reader mode'-ish version of a webpage with its images?

I want the text and assets, even if they're messy, but not the fonts or facebook widgets and every internationalised wordpress.org subdomain that wp pulls in because it was, presumably, architected by the cast of hellraiser

I tried out Procreate Dreams sometime last year, and I refunded it after about an hour because I discovered each brushstroke you painted was captured at the zoom-level at which you painted

this is... bad... but it was made worse by the fact you couldn't easily restore a zoom level, other than 100% — it basically made it unusable for professional fixed-resolution delivery because you were working blind

anyway loads of people were complaining about it and they might have even fixed it by now 1/3

I'm back to reading through the Discworld (I'm on my tenth or so of the ~40 books) and every time I come back I'm reminded just how unfathomably based Terry Pratchett was

In my defence, they're split across four or five different windows on different virtual desktops, and each one is for a different thing I'm working on — there are ~100 open a work window just for US tax legislation and Stripe/TaxJar/accounts packages integration, for example, which will be summarily closed in a grand flourishing button press at the end of next week when I close up this project I'm managing

I need to reset Firefox because my bookmark manager's addon has shat its pants and no amount of disabling/reinstalling it is helping

...but I have 690 tabs open I have to deal with first

I went from "urgh why do we have to deal with types" when I first started using systems languages to "oh my gods scripting languages are just machines for making logic bombs" whenever I use high-level languages now

writing Python plugins and dealing with perfectly functional scripts that will bring down the host program only when a specific button is pressed because I'm accessing a struct field in the wrong place

why do we do this to ourselves and why does everyone think it's better?!

I got #lena running in webassembly and it ran embedded into itch first time, which is exciting

so Lena now works 100% natively on —

Linux too, with some help from SDL2, which comes with Odin's stdlib, so it still technically has no external deps. Just the Odin compiler!

it's almost there, I'm just fretting over some API decisions — mostly audio, because I've never used an audio API I didn't hate and now I've tried to build one I sort of understand why...

this is painted as an unbelievable, insurmountable task and a mammoth feat of human effort... but it's like... you did one all-nighter to deliver the film? okay?

meanwhile the fact that the edit for the entire fight sequence was only locked two weeks before means that reams of artists were finishing these shots, including final animation, lighting, simulating, compositing and rendering twenty minutes of pretty incredible visual work, which apparently does not merit a single mention

for the past few evenings, I've been watching the 10+ hour Hobbit trilogy BTS reels

I learned that the entire foundry/Smaug fight was added in two months as the decision to change from two to three movies was made, with the entire cast and crew were recalled for pickups

the final edit was locked two weeks before the premiere, and an agonising deal is made out of how the dubbing mixers had to work with unfinished footage, delivering the last reel of the film in a marathon 24 hour session

I'm ramping up work on my film again after an uncomfortable amount of my day-job consuming my entire life and not having the energy to face animation

looked back on my original lookdev and some of the shots I had gotten as far as rendering and realised it was looking a bit lacklustre, so to get back into the swing of things, I reworked my anamorphic lens/compositing technique and rebuilt the rig for the main characters' car
