Toot

You may have seen a lot of "middle aged" women posting about bad behaviour in their early careers. I have many stories to add. But I think you've already got the idea.

Sad thing is, it wasn't just back then in the bad old days.

It's still happening now. Less blatantly mostly. But hidden or blatent it's still there.

If you see it, call it.

Because it stays with us all our fucking lives.

@drlucyrogers I used to work at a supermarket and my team leader never complained when one of the colleagues used to fondle her boobs. No-one said a word. Also, the same guy shouted, 'Show us your cock' to the boss. The guy concerned was ADHD but that is absolutely no excuse. The tolerance nowadays is just the same in that environment.

@Beclfc @drlucyrogers I turned up to meet with a member of the senior executive, representing others with a serious complaint. I was also pregnant. As I walked in he started the meeting with a joke about hoping the baby wasn’t his. I realised immediately what kind of power play that was, and how cleverly deniable. People think universities aren’t shop floors but I’ve worked in both and I tell ya.

@kate @Beclfc @drlucyrogers

I used to work in senior management in a secondary school with the most insane workload.

When I left my line manager, the Assistant Principle, said, that he was so impressed with the work I had done over the years "especially considering I was a mother of three".

@drlucyrogers

When my brother and I were squabbling 'drop dead' and slamming the door was the way we ended things. Our mother went mad every time. Years later she explained. During WW2 she worked on an RAF base and had been groped by a senior officer. She told him to drop dead. And that night he died of a heart attack. Logically she knew he was relic of WW1 brought out of retirement, a smoker and drinker and a heart attack was not unexpected but the whole thing stayed with her.

@drlucyrogers Back in my Uni days I did a placement year working on satellites, I was talking to a colleague, who hadn't long graduated herself, about her studies and career that kind of thing and was shocked by some of the behaviour she had to face. Even at school she was told not to go into engineering and instead to focus on having babies!

I was genuinely lost for words.

When someone has to go through so much even "just a little joke" compounds a lifetime of sexism.
