Tomb inside St Michael & All Angels, Hawkshead. Apparently the tomb is of the parents of Edwin Sandys, from the village, who became Archbishop of York; it is dated 1578.

@carusb Looks like the central bit, at least, is stone? So, first of all, probably old, and second of all, pretty heavy to be on a bridge!

Just a few guesses why anyone would do that.

@14mission Yes it's definitely stone-built, I found a Street View image of the other side. Not a toll gate as there are side routes around it. A water gate would be dodgy: close it and you'd flood your house. A small mill is a possibility; there were lots of mills on the Angidy, which was a centre for high quality wire making from 17th to 19th century, and brass before that.
