Hi friends! I have some questions for you as I’m working to gather the last of my evidence on this platform for my social media class essay. First, here’s a picture of me and my mama at the wedding we attended this past weekend. And for the first time ever, I actually went on the dance floor and danced!
I wanted to dance because I’ve done my fair share of just sitting at gatherings, and it makes the time pass by so slowly. So I pushed myself out of my comfort zone, didn’t allow myself the chance to think about being embarrassed, and felt that the fear that comes with thinking about it completely faded as the evening went on.
In what ways do you feel that Mastodon have helped you interact with others about topics that you may not interact with in person? What motivates you to interact with the content/communities on mastodon? What do you think you get out of your interactions? #socialmedia #art #artist #student #MastoArt

@anasti I don't see much of a difference between what I can say here or in real life.
On Mastodon or other SN, I can talk about what I like and share with people that might be more interested than IRL. ;)
I get back the same kind of info: hobbies, art, news, ...

@sgtpepere thank you so much for the feedback! I wonder if those that use the platform a little less honestly would be willing to share their thoughts on my post? But that’s wonderful to hear that you feel that you can express yourself freely here and in real life!

@anasti
I'm a longtime meditator, especially in the Zen tradition.
I relocated two years ago to a new part of the world (near Asheville, NC).
Noticed Zen-themed posts by a user here ... turns out they're a resident in a local Zen community.
I now regularly practice with them.
🙏🙂

@bodhidave that’s wonderful that you found someone with a common interest and now physically interact with them on a regular basis. I love how the internet can bring us together with people we might never have met without it! Do you feel that this relationship that began through the internet is different from relationships that you may first have developed in real life?

@anasti
At this point in my life — retired, contentedly living solo on a hillside — relationships tend to connect with meditation practice. So it's a different "real life."
You remind me, though, a best online friend lives in Europe. But we've come to figure out that we used to live in the same city at the same time, and that we used attend the same meditation center — only she sat there in the mornings and I in the afternoons, and we never met in person there. :)

@anasti Hashtags have been a way for me to open doors to interests across servers. I found a community around #MakersHour . I see clever and pretty solutions to cloth repair in #VisibleMending . Sometimes people have a blog or video channel with more work of interest, worth linking and thanking.
I have an old friend to appreciate for knowing alt text on images as a practice of kindness and inclusion.

@jmeowmeow As I’m returning to some replies and old content to incorporate for my final essay, I’m so thankful for your feedback!! This is such a wonderful comment that will definitely be helping contribute to my thesis discussing the social economics on Mastodon. <3

@anasti One point about Mastodon which is a little confusing when first joining is that each server represents a residence and a point of view.
The more specific your interests or needs, the more important the choice is. Some servers don't talk to each other for reasons of content or moderation.
Different servers are maintained more or less diligently. Sometimes they shut down. Migration of follows/followers to a new server is at least built-in.
l chose one with people I knew on Twitter.

@jmeowmeow I definitely agree that it was quite confusing when first joining Mastodon.
It makes sense that certain servers don’t talk to others because this platform is very community driven, so it makes sense that moderators may also have different standards of moderating.
Many people have mentioned their migration from Twitter, I think that’ll be interesting to investigate for my essay as well. Thank you for the insightful feedback as usual!

@anasti Pleased that I can be helpful in building your understanding so you can share it.
If no one has yet mentioned it, you may want to consider the notion of Eternal September as a moment which broke another distributed community in the early 1990s. If a community grows faster than culture, customs, and wisdom can be transferred, it dissolves. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eternal_September
