In a recent newsletter I wrote that we should not ignore the agency of small states, and that #Ukraine can find ways to make it very hard for the U.S. to withdraw from the conflict. Well, here we go.

@anderspuck well the other parties to the Budapest memorandum haven't exactly kept up their end of the bargain, makes sense they'd use this option as leverage.

@anderspuck this was kind of a talking point already in 2022 and should surprise nobody: stop russia's invasion or more "small" countries might pursue nuclear weapons.

@anderspuck Poland and other smaller states should join the nuclear program with Ukraine. If our leaders are even 0.01% as competent as I expect them to be, this is already in progress.

The US is sadly unstable politically and cannot be considered reliable partner after Trump presidency.

@anderspuck This is the part most people miss about the Ukraine story. They had nukes, they gave them up for promises of protection. How hopeful and forward thinking is that? If we ever want to reduce nuclear arms again we need to honour those agreements and provide proper protection to Ukraine. Not the slow death we’re currently offering.

@anderspuck

Am imagining the indefatigable Zelensky, during the last hours of his US trip, going to meet with that thug in his unwelcoming space in Dump Tower, face to face at that hideous square table without so much as a glass of water. He was giving the 🇷🇺 aligned former pres a review and reality check of the situation. We can make nukes, too. It was telling that the felon felt it necessary to blurt out Putin’s name in his brief remarks to the press afterward. And then Z’s quip re friends.🤔

@anderspuck

I think Jake Broe also said that part of the strategy of NATO was to prevent nuclear proliferation because members without them wouldn’t need them due to members with them.

He continued to say that Trump threatening to not back NATO will accelerate nuclear proliferation.

Side note on NATO to debunk Trump lies.

• 2% of GDP is advisable but not required.

• It’s spending on yourself not gifted to America. America isn’t owed, it’s mutual.

• Most members are above 2%.

• Article 5 does consider an attack on one is an attack on all, but the response made is “such action as it deems necessary”. This plays both ways and so doesn’t have to be all in.

@anderspuck

But that pretty much plays into Trumps hands.

He will say, OK, bye bye, no more support from us.

He will probably help Russia take Ukraine in total.

@Havant_Enviro In that case we will see Europe and the U.S. on opposite sides in this conflict. Quite a depressing scenario.
