I know there’s a lot of newcomers to the Fediverse, that want an audience instead of a community, make fun of us old time Fedi people that want slower, more intentional, social media, but I simply have to know from the crew that want an audience more than a community. I’m currently caught in a never-ending spam wave. If administrators and otherwise just let this continue to happen, there are a large number of people that would just defederate your instance because of the spam. I genuinely want to know how can you think that people would tolerate massive amounts of spam waves just so you could have an audience? #Fediverse #MastoAdmin

@weirdwriter I think people who want an audience should have their own instances, or am I over-simplifying things and that really wouldn’t matter? I’m with you though, I’d rather have community than an audience.

@SteveSawczyn I think so about the people that want an audience having their own instances. I don’t think you’re over simplifying the issue, but it’s a very complex issue because, aside from the technical, you’ve got opposing philosophies to deal with. For example, the people that have open and unrestricted registrations even though their instances are huge. If you get more members, you get more people willing to donate to keep your massive instance operational but this leads to the current spam problem where even if you ban a user, they’ll just make another account. I don’t know how you would solve that issue

@weirdwriter Hi! IF you're experiencing a spam problem, please haunt the admins of your instance. If the admins of your current instance aren't being very responsive, consider moving to a new instance. Full disclosure: I run one where signups are open, and I eat spam for lunch, provided it's reported/I know about it.
