As this worked for the Internet Archive, let’s try another one:
I am looking first an engineering contact at Youtube to troubleshoot the issue with them no longer returning metadata when Mastodon tries to fetch the preview for a video. It comes from their side and something changed a few weeks ago, and I would like to see how this can be fixed.
Fediverse, do your magic ✨

Yes, it's been like this now for a month or three.
But what's interesting is some instances can get the data and some can't. I've been trying to find a solution myself.
I assumed it might be YouTube trying to stop folks watching within Mastodon and avoiding their advertising? Just a guess.
Good luck.

@JSharp1436 @renchap Yeah, they want to push me to Youtube and then they block me because of my adblocker. Well, the adblocker isn't coming down, Youtube guys. Guess I won't watch your shitty video.

Quick question: if I upload to mastodon a downloaded YouTube video, so it plays within mastodon, will that have breached any of their rules?

we have rules?

YouTube rules. I don't think we do. I'm just being super cautious.

[#]Invidious helps:
https://docs.invidious.io/instances/
Take one of the Instances there, copy the youtube-URL and paste it in the Invidious-Instance, enter and look the video without tracking and advertisement 🙂

OH THAT'S GOOD NEWS IF GOOGLE YOUTUBE DOESN'T WORK HERE!
We long have needed to keep to the principles that we individually or Mastodon itself lost or didn't continue in blocking some obviously bad players working here (and helping people use better alternative software or alterntive links insetad.
NOT sitting back as Mastodon becomes an AD-FARMS for Mastodon users while putting all these google links  :google: :awesome:
If you cared you wouldn't do that at all!)... But who cares right if Google / YouTube and video - just users getting reaped here...
:google: MILLIONS OF LINKS PER DAY :google: 🔗 = :awesome:
BUT HOLD ON - AN ANSWER LOOMS OVER YONDER...
@invidious helps us all filter google video pages !!! Horraah! EXAMPLES BELOW:
https://invidious.jing.rocks/watch?v=LP1V8G-JPLQ <---any video ID
or use geographically:
https://redirect.invidious.io/watch?v=LP1V8G-JPLQ <---any video ID
IS IT SOOOO HARD FOR YOU TO SWITCH URLS?
Instead of letting your followers get tracked or advertised to just use an Invidious links within Mastodon so they are not link$ for Google: Score for the right team.
Invidious filtering let the google fans get the video but filters out the bad.
:eyes_opposite: I'M AMAZED AT ALL YOU TECHIES 👀 WHO SEEM NOT TO CARE AND REALLY WANT GOOGLE YOUTUBE TO WORK HERE... WTF
DO BETTER
OR NOT AT ALL YOU GOOGLE-FOR-GOVERNMENT ENCOURAGERS ! 🔥

What I heard when I first noticed it showing up was, because of the way a post to the fediverse propagates to multiple servers, YouTube was seeing multiple hits for the same URL and preview at once and it looked like a DDOS attack.
Then instances had to create intermediary servers with generic previews to prevent whatever lockouts were triggered by the appearance of a DDOS attack.

@renchap The fact that it's an issue for some instances (probably smaller ones?) and not others lends credence to the DDOS mitigation theory.

On a computer...
Access YouTube via a browser not an app and copy the URL in the browser window has worked for me.
On a mobile device...
You're f**ked and it's the same with Instagram links 🤷

@renchap Mastodon is getting bigger and a competence towards the bigger known mainstream US social media.
Knowing US corporations a bit, Mastodon -not being US- might be on a list to block by other US corporations. Just saying, not sure if this is a 'bug' or just 'wanted'.

@renchap they have been cracking down on scraper services such as Invidious. This is a collateral. I assume they might make an exception for your instance, but the issue won't be solved for most any time soon.

Sometimes if you use yt-dlp (youtube-dl) without a vpn or even with, you get the "prove you're not a bot" message.
I wonder if this is happening on the backend.
Either way, I hope someone passes on a YouTube contact to him so it can get sorted out.

@renchap it works for youtube.com links but not youtu.be I believe

@aburka @renchap It's a shame the url shortener (why even do that nowadays?) is limited in this way. People ought to copy out of the address bar. But on the other hand, the share button does make it easier to include a time-stamp.

@aburka @renchap I've found that (for me at least) previews always work with www.youtube.com links but never work with any other domain/subdomain variations, including:
youtu.be (➡️ youtube.com)
youtube.com
m.youtube.com

@renchap well, you can always reach the youtube-dl guys directly

@renchap yes, I hope you make progress figuring this out. The previews are useless now, and clicking them (instead of the link in the post body) takes me to the wrong url every time (youtube.com/undefined or something like that).

@renchap is it possible that this is related to YouTube blocking Peertube instances from syncing/retrieving YT videos?
