“The thing that really upset Dorsey: Bluesky users demanded moderation and Bluesky put it into place. Yeah, that was the whole issue.”
Good reflection on “decentralized” social media and what Dorsey really wants from it by @davidgerard:

"Decentralisation is an anti-feature for a social network because it leads to the sort of technical detail that hampers functionality."
Difficult to argue against that with the current state of affairs to be honest. I'm piloting a Mastodon-compatible instance for a local solidarity economy group and they're struggling with basic usability issues.

I read the original interview with Mr. Dorsey. What he wanted out of Bluesky was not a new social network, but a new decentralised protocol for social networks — that's an entirely reasonable goal. Bluesky has a protocol, but at present it's primarily a network. It’s understandable that Mr. Dorsey is disappointed.

with so much money and #ActivityPub already working, he had to go build his own? I'm disappointed in him. harrumph.

Mr. Gerard mentions in his article the strange omission of ActivityPub from Mr. Dorsey's interview. I can see why he might think ActivityPub doesn't meet all his goals for a protocol, but the fact that it already exists and is growing should be reason to work for improvement, not to start a new initiative.

@mpjgregoire @parismarx perhaps on the face of it, but I did note all the things he didn't mention, such as the existing decentralised network we're writing on now
it's also full of libertarian dogwhistles that look like English but are not
I mean - I did in fact read and link the interview when writing up what it meant. saying you read the surface words and they seem ok to you is nice for you, but doesn't refute anything.

@parismarx @davidgerard I agree. Decentralization is an anti-feature for most users most of the time. You only see the benefit when you’ve been here a while.
