Developers are truly weird beings. Deep inside they know that software is just inert, soulless. Structured prose that can be copy-pasted, morphed, thrown away.

They also know that, because of the social dynamics of software, sometimes the only way to make progress is through creative destruction. Starting from scratch and build something that is worse, but better.

And yet they develop an emotional attachment to cherry-picked softwares and feel pain when said destruction happens.

What prevents somebody from hosting a community-operated ATProto relay with a few selected PDS and chronological-only Feed Generator?

In other words, what prevents us from building a Fediverse disjoint (and not controlled by) Bluesky PBC, and based on ATProto instead of ActivityPub?

Well, I'm on Bluesky - without even registering there :)

Thanks @bsky.brid.gy !

[#]LazyFedi There was a very cool blog post by some of the JupyterLite authors describing the technical hurdles they had to overcome to run Jupyter on Pyodide (things like running a Tornado web server without blocking the main thread etc) but I can't seem to find it... @jtp @ProjectJupyter or anyone, any clue?

First time I hear about build-less projects on this issue by @anze3db https://github.com/astral-sh/uv/issues/6321

Does build-less mean "I don't care what the build backend is, since this is pure Python" or skipping parts of the installation process entirely? Where can I read more?

Re-discovered this paragraph from @pluralistic by @doctorow

https://pluralistic.net/2020/04/29/banjo-nazis/#cuckoos-egg

What makes a software library or an API "beautiful" then, in a way that helps us overcome the unavoidable complexities and obscurities of today's software stack and motivates us to troubleshoot and debug rather than give up?

Folks I have something to tell you.

Many of us were using Telegram not because it was secure. We were using it because it was useful, easy to use, feature-rich, and fun. Unlike WhatsApp (I lose my message history in every migration, communities are a nightmare, the desktop app is shit). Unlike Signal (hello? is there anybody here?). Unlike Matrix (a UX nightmare I can't even start describing).

Maybe you could start practicing the art of TALKING TO USERS

I love the @fediversereport, it's consistently well written and packed with insightful bits.

I learned that a few Spaniard influencers joined Bluesky, maybe it's time for me to explore Bsky-Fedi bridges...

For tech stuff and degrowth/sustainability I'm loving it here so I will stay on Mastodon for the time being.

(But considering moving to social.coop or some other instance, ActivityPub clearly doesn't provide a good experience on single-user instances)
