Glancing through Twitter the day after, I found lots of theories:

I use the Python library #Pint to integrate units into my #engineering calculations. In general, it works well with #NumPy, but I discovered yesterday that units are lost when using the "piecewise" function on an array with units.
Possibly the problem would be solved if I upgraded to the latest versions of Pint and NumPy; both have seen a lot of development in recent years. But I won't depend upon NumPy > v.2.0 until it's been released in Debian Stable.

It's hard to believe any public figure would make a Nazi salute, Nazis being nearly universally despised. (Nazism ought to be despised without exception.)

For what it's worth, I don't think US democracy is seriously imperilled either. To make some specific predictions:

I see people commenting on how strange it is that a few months ago, Democrats were calling Mr. Trump a #fascist, but now they're shaking his hand, chatting with him, and preparing the transition between Administrations.
It was a lie. Sure, they disagree with his policies, think he'll make the US a worse place, etc. [0] But most Democratic politicians don't really believe President Trump is an existential threat to American democracy.

[#]ColbyCosh this morning points out the intriguing fact that #MarkCarney and #ChrystiaFreeland both spent their formative years in #Alberta, and of course whichever of the two wins will then face ex-Albertan #PierrePoilievre in a general election.
Let's go, #Alberta !

’God Save the King’ to make a return to some Manitoba classrooms
https://nationalpost.com/news/canada/manitoba-schools-god-save-the-king
I remember as an elementary school student in BC in the 1980s, we'd stand for "O Canada" every morning at the start of classes. (Pretty sure they don't do that here in Québec.) "God Save the Queen" was restricted to Remembrance Day. When my mother was a child, they played "God Save the Queen" at the movie theatre before shows.
It's good to see this part of Canadian identity reasserted.

"Ce n’est pas la souveraineté du Québec qui fait peur à la droite québécoise. C’est la sainte alliance des gauchistes/péquistes/syndicalistes/solidaires du camp du OUI. Quand on entend PSPP parler de l’importance de se séparer parce que nos valeurs ne sont pas celles de Pierre Poilievre. [...] Comme des centaines de milliers de Québécois francophones de vieille souche, j’ai pas mal plus de valeurs en commun avec Pierre Poilievre qu’avec PSPP ou GND."

All eyes on Champagne as Quebec waits for Liberal leadership candidate
https://nationalpost.com/news/canada/liberal-francois-philippe-champagne-justin-trudeau
I think #FrançoisPhilippeChampagne would be a good choice for the Liberals, but I expect they'll stick to their practice of "alternance" between francophone and anglophone leaders. Really this sets up Mr. Champagne well for the next Liberal leadership race.

Their most significant gamble was probably their promise to run deficits, outflanking the NDP on the left. I know that for many on Mastodon their (broken) promise to end #FPTP still stings.
But here, let me list a few good but unpopular policies they promised to cancel:
It's a shame.

In the 2015 Canadian general election, the Liberals were desperate. For over a hundred years, their party had been first or second in Canadian federal politics — mostly first. But they were starting in third place. Was their destiny to be pushed aside by a party further to the left, as had happened in #ukpol and some of the provinces? #JustinTrudeau and his team decided to take some risks...

[#]PaulWells offers to interview candidates for the #LPC leadership"
"I felt a little better when I saw Vassy Kapelos say that she hasn't interviewed Trudeau since 2018 and has never interviewed Poilievre. I mean, when did our leaders become such chickens. I guarantee to all of these people that the job will always be far, far harder than the questions."

Many people on the Fediverse seem upset that Meta is ending its use of fact-checkers, but no one seems concerned that there is no formal fact-checking here at all.
I suppose that's because on the #Fediverse one only finds truth...

I watched the #MarkZuckerberg video today regarding Meta's moderation policies. It confirms my preference for the Fediverse.
There are difficult free speech issues: Should vile speech attacking groups be permitted? Lies? What about quoting liars? Libel? Shocking images? Blasphemy? Insults? Doxxing?
The truth is that there's no one policy that is appropriate for all situations. The right approach is to have many communities, each with its own rules, and a protocol to connect them.
