Keynote was by @audreyt and I just have to share the beautiful poem-prayer:

When we see “internet of things”, let’s make it an internet of beings.

When we see “virtual reality”, let’s make it a shared reality.

When we see “machine learning”, let’s make it collaborative learning.

When we see “user experience”, let’s make it about human experience.

When we hear “the singularity is near”, let us remember: the plurality is here.

First time at #ALGIM24 (Annual conference of the Association of Local Government Information Management). Huge conference with 500 delegates. Six parallel streams, spanning ICT, web/digital/comms, customer experience, geospatial, Smart Communities and information management, with collaboration as the focus.

(Personally I don't like parallel streams, but I can understand it's a great way to attract sponsors/vendors.)

I did a random search for "digitalpreservation" on Meta's Thread, and I'm surprised to see quite a number of #DigiPres related posts. It's actually on par with what we have here at the Fediverse - digipres.club and Bluesky. Now we need a way to pull all of them into a single place. Would Reeder be the answer?

I really missed the good old live conference posting (tweet/toot/skeet/blog), especially as virtual/remote attendees. Big part of conference participation is to talk about what we've just heard. It's all well and good if we're there in-person, but surely virtual attendance shouldn't be just a passive "Watch the livestream" experience.

Opeta Alefaio, PhD at ANU, former director National Archives of Fiji.

Highlighted the state of Pacific archives, disinvestment, undervalued, lack of training and career path

Also lack of collected data for UN Millennium Development Goals (MDG) and SDG. Lack of evidence to support climate change work. Climate funds $10bil but need data and evidence to access it.

Used to have access to Aus/NZ archives leadership, but no longer. Growing gap CAARA vs PARBICA

It's a very difficult and confronting symposium. So much to do, I'm taking notes and trying to absorb as much as I can. But it's really hard to do live posting, because I'm concerned that my brevity might miss the necessary nuances, and misrepresent the speakers.

Started with the gathering personal papers and records, under the bed, bedroom drawers, garage.

Elders come together for the mapping exercise. Survey and labeling. People involved enjoy the community coming together to do this work.

4 years just to map place names of southern alps area. Whole of south island is the goal. Elder advised that it's okay, we will do it bit by bit. No rush.

Not just mapping, visit the areas as well.

As if prompted by #FF2024, RNZ ran this article featuring Peter Lucas-Jones and the great 92% accuracy Te Reo Māori text-to-speech work at Te Hiku Media.

"It is important to recognise that big tech is not going to save te reo Māori."

[#]FF2024 ended with a literal bang in the form of Triptych, EDM+AV Mechanical Synaesthesia, by Robin Fox. It was loud, intense, immersive, and what could only be described as an unforgettable "trip" 🔥🔥🤩💫💥. Nothing I've ever experienced before. A reimagining. In many ways, that was one of the main threads at #FF2024 - deliberate and cautious approach, ask questions, be more conscientious, do #SlowAI if possible. Certainly a reimagining of how AI projects have been done post-Kraken 🐙 👹🧌.

Just like @mia, this talk by Barbara Shubinski, Rockerfeller Archive Center, drew me in, and I couldn't summarise. It would be great as a full talk. Maybe at #FF2025
