First up Thea, IP rights coordinator, NMA. EV Llewellyn collection, copy of Stradivari cello, viola, violin by Arthur E Smith. Not static. Still used to perform. Contextual assets - recordings, research notes. Unruly - missing information and findability.

An attempt to wrangle the unruly contextual assets. IP data much more complicated than objects. Minimal datasets. Structure for linking records and materials. NMA digital preservation team looking into getting Trusted Digital Rspository with rights management built-in (@audiovisualopen 😎)

Chris Arnell, digital games curator, NFSA.
96% classic Australian video games are at-risk of being loss. There's something legal deposit for Australian made games, depositing a copy at NFSA, ongoing work.
Conducted international video game preservation survey. Most respondents list financial and resourcing issues as most significant challenges, especially for org with no dedicated resourcing.

Bec, digital preservation analyst, AGNSW, on complex born-digital/software-based art work, or curly media - time-based media (TBM) preservation.
TBM, materials with duration element. Ephemeral, changeable. Combination digital and physical components. Example, three screen video With surround sound, include sand on the ground.

Example: Groundloop by Lisa Reihana. 500 GB access file. Terabytes (TB) of preservation file, has multiple copies. Lots of collaboration, engineering, technicians, hardware, software just to install the artwork. Second image: sample of the complexity involved. (Me: fascinated by Blackmagic monitor not supporting 10-bit natively. Wonder what lossless compression it's using?)

Challenges in designing the intellectual entity. How to include both hardware and software. Include software as each artist use software idiosyncratic way.

In-house developer "Throughput Manager" constantly revise the tool to deal with the unruly retrieval and supply issue. Custom tools create freedom, but also can create problems.
(me: 😍love the command line utility. Important to have in-house expertise to deal with the unruliness)

Dan Eady: Unruly doesn't mean difficult, it should be seen as call to answer. Challenges are worth the work. Towards a more 'ruly' future.

Q from @prwheatley: Digital objects getting more unruly. What steps to deal with this?
A (Chris): Proactive in dealing with inaccessibility, sometimes on donation/deposit. Work with creators to figure it out. Not wait to deal with it years later.
A (Thea): works created by AI, no copyright protection. Legal need to catch up. Missing IP always an issue, now digital even more complex.
