Looks like it's just available on the web now:

Remember, there's no harm in escaping to someplace quiet for a few minutes, and thinking about nothing. Kind of like meditating. Breath.

ftp.ncei.noaa.gov is closing connections over FTP. The port seems to be open, it's just closing things upon connection.

Their website says that they're going offline for maintenance on Feb 4th, but doesn't say anything about taking stuff down due to executive orders or whatever.

I don't know if it was just getting hammered too hard, or if anyone was told to turn it off.

I think by this point people have archived it, but it's still a little telling.

Now might not be a bad time to brush up on self-hosting, if you're so-inclined. Encryption as well. Like, if any of it sounds interesting, read up on it maybe experiment. Know your limits, what you want to get into, but push your comfort zone a little.

Not everyone has to self-host everything. But some people can, and should. Some can self-host one thing, others something else.

Here's the thing: it's not just about having a service that you control to a greater degree. It's about learning it, and understanding what it takes to do it, and how to keep doing it when it breaks. Either on its own, or because someone else wants it to.

If you get it going, not only do you have the thing you self-hosted, you have the knowledge. They can try to erase it, but it has a tendency to spread, if people want it to.

Replace 'self-host' with some other skill too. Learning is resistance. Dumb little things like Linux-related posts on FB being censored may not seem like much in isolation, but look at that in the context of what the entities we call Big Tech are doing right now.

I don't really know what's going to happen. It's too early to tell, but it's true what they say that knowledge is power.

Just some thoughts.

Someone over on r/DataHoarder has a list of US gov FTP servers, and is archiving them:

In fact, if you're in a data hoarding mood, it's probably worth checking to see if whichever service you're interested in is still using good old-fashioned FTP.

For whomever may be interested: if you wanted to download NOAA data, ftp.ncei.noaa.gov appears to be a thing, in case you wanted to go that route instead of pointing wget at a web page or something.

When making backups and doing general data hoarding, it's probably not a bad idea to be thinking about infrastructure. That is, free software like various utilities, server programs, and OSes.

I'm not sure how likely it is for some of that stuff to just disappear altogether, but I could imagine being in a situation in which one needs to set up some kind of server or workstation quickly, and at least in my case I take for granted being having all that stuff accessible via the internet through a package manager.

I've been thinking I need to come up with some sort of a DC UPS for Raspberry Pis and other such tiny computers. I was thinking about just floating a small 6-volt lead acid battery for this Raspberry Pi 0, but just never really got around to it.

Well, due to an accidental power glitch in my hobbyist off-grid system, the little Raspberry Pi 0 W I was using for monitoring it has rebooted. Last time I checked it had over 340 days of uptime.

I'm a little ticked off, although in fairness it wasn't really doing much, and it probably would have run forever. Also, uptime for the sake of uptime probably isn't a good practice overall, although again in this case there was hardly anything to actually update. Probably a kernel update now and then though.

Some pictures of our two arctic foxes. These two aren't the most sociable with human staff members, but they love being fed.

Some more #wolf pictures. These were from back in September, on a day we weren't open to the public, but a bunch of us came up to work on a project. They were wondering what the humans were up to.

The little remote sensor that came with my indoor/outdoor thermometer broke, after the batteries leaked sometime over the summer. I took it apart and when I hooked it up to a couple AA batteries with clip leads, I saw that the LED blinked, so it's still more or less works.

In the meantime, I had the receiver still running, and it was picking up somebody else's thermometer. For a while. It seemed to reflect the outdoor temperature, but then it looked like it was picking one up from inside, hence why I started taking a look at the little transmitter again.

Now I have the transmitter hooked up to a couple batteries and set on top of a radiator, and the receiver is reading a "outdoor" temperature of 95° F, Even though it's got to be in the twenties outside. I think I'll leave it on for a little bit on the off chance the other person receiver picks it up.
