The little remote sensor that came with my indoor/outdoor thermometer broke, after the batteries leaked sometime over the summer. I took it apart and when I hooked it up to a couple AA batteries with clip leads, I saw that the LED blinked, so it's still more or less works.
In the meantime, I had the receiver still running, and it was picking up somebody else's thermometer. For a while. It seemed to reflect the outdoor temperature, but then it looked like it was picking one up from inside, hence why I started taking a look at the little transmitter again.
Now I have the transmitter hooked up to a couple batteries and set on top of a radiator, and the receiver is reading a "outdoor" temperature of 95° F, Even though it's got to be in the twenties outside. I think I'll leave it on for a little bit on the off chance the other person receiver picks it up.
