Convo I just overheard:
“It does duplex automatically”
“Yeah, but I want it on the other side”
“Leave as default, duplex will handle that”.
“But I have two pages”
“Two double-sided pages?”
“No, just two pages”
“Duplex in then. It’ll print both sides”
“Okay cool. What if I want them both on one page?”
“You mean, like, scaled?”
“No, one on both sides”
Then I was called up. Would love to know how this ended.

My Hot Take™ for the month: Chatbots are the customer-service equivalent of Electron desktop “apps”:
• Nobody external to the business would choose to use them, because they’re functionally worse.
• They externalise their costs.
• They suck.

Fun story, my dad met Bob Hawke once for an industry event. From what he told me, he entered the room scowling, and someone did that “aheh-hem, I have a theory” bit from Monty Python, and he laughed so hard he was smiling the whole rest of the time. I like that story.

Also, someone who’s the spitting image of Bob Hawke just walked into this coffee shop. As in, I had to do the doublest of double takes. Wow. Bob Hawke. I bet he gets that a lot. Something something boss bums. #straya

Have a day of personal leave today. You know what that means: INSTANT HEADACHE!
Am I one of those cliche people who’s addicted to work? As in, physically?!
I enjoy a lot of my job, but I also enjoy relaxing on the couch with a book, or going on a bush walk, or literally so many other things.

Two weeks of data centre work and I’m exhausted. 20-something me would have done this no worries.
Getting old! Better than the alternative™
Probably a sign I need to get fitter too. Losing weight and eating right is only half of it.

The difference between a good blanking plate, and a bad one, is vast.
Thin, flexible pieces of plastic with tiny cage nut clips: bad.
Rigid, thick plastic with clips 1U high, or metal ones that screw into the rack: good.

I'll admit, taking a break and helping the data centre gents do upgrades and hardware checks has been oddly... cathartic? It's like I'm back where I started for a week!
My finger tips thank me for wearing bandaids. DIMMs are sharp mofos at scale.

A specific situation in my life—and the person(s) involved—just jackhammered through the Rock Bottom I thought they’d reached.
I’m okay! But bemused doesn’t begin to cover it. Incredulous? Nuclear levels of incredulous?
“I apologise, I’m Three Miles short of an Island to take your call right now!”

(I know given this is Masto, this may generate a lot of "you could/would/should have done $FOO. We did. This was more just venting about an issue. HAH venting).

There was a gas leak in our building over the weekend, and I was... surprised how blasé everyone was about it?
Neighbours weren't bothered. Emergency number for strata went to voicemail. Jemena (the gas distributor) said "yeeeaaaaah... long weekend, we probably won't get anyone out for a day or two.
For a GAS. LEAK. Kind of a sobering experience.
Woke up this morning and the smell was gone, so I suspect a neighbour left their stove on or something. All the more reason to get rid of gas.

Made the mistake of registering my Dell 4K panel when I bought it. SO MUCH spam.
“Your warranty will expire in $FOO months”, where $FOO is an integer between 1 and 12.
“Important information about your warranty”
“Did you know blah blah blah”
“Your Dell service contract is expiring”
“At Dell we take your feedback seriously”
“You haven’t slept in 6 Minecraft days. The Dell Phantom will swoop down to kill you”

I tend to run things very conservatively, but I’ve been happy with how MediaWiki runs with Postgres. I haven’t run into any issues, though I don’t run anything but the stock plugins.
ClassicPress is the last thing I host for people that still runs MySQL. One day I’ll have a solution for that as well.

Feeling the travel itch something fierce again. Need to get back down to Melbourne again sometime soon, this time not for DC work but to see people. Adelaide too.
It's funny how almost all my online friends are in VIC and SA, and my iRL ones are in Sydney where I am. Wait no, that makes sense.

Where we're living now doesn't face a highway anymore.
Sitting on the balcony, I heard a couple of carbrains honking at each other in the distance. I realised just how often I used to hear this, and how jarring it now is again. Crazy how you become acclimated to it.
