This tool from @KrauseFx is interesting for inspecting what sort of JavaScript is being injected into all web pages by apps that present a custom in-app web view instead of using the system web view or just jumping you out to your default browser.

Shortcuts nerds: is there a utility that offers a time picker with :05 (or even better, :15 or :30) increments for the minutes dial? The built-in :60 minute dial is such a main in the ass when all you ever want are “even” minutes.

Lesson from this year’s playoffs: teams that play outdoors in the cold at home are hard and strong, and teams that play in domes are soft.

Also, a great tip in this post: drag a bunch of folders or files to Archive Utility and you'll get a bunch of compressed archives, instead of one single “Archive.zip" file like you do in the Finder.

So the Finder’s Compress command (File menu or contextual menu) creates Zip archives (.zip), but the Archive Utility app defaults to creating compressed archives in .cpgz format. That’s a thing I learned from this @dmoren story:

https://sixcolors.com/link/2025/01/compress-folders-into-separate-archives/

Why the Finder uses good old .zip is obvious: it’s universal.

But why in the world does Archive Utility default to this bizarre .cpgz GNU archive format? It’s not like compression is better (if at all). Anyone know? Or have a good guess?

The EU sacked its crusading grandstanding duo of Margrethe Vestager and Thierry Breton before the U.S. election, so it’s not entirely or even mostly about Trump. They’re just coming to their senses that a radical DMA interpretation isn’t going to change these companies, it would just turn the EU into more of a technological backwater than it already is.

“Mars After Midnight” was my favorite Playdate game of the year. Very fun, original and weird, looks and sounds very cool, and took just the right amount of time to figure out and win.

Because of my recent sale of DF-branded t-shirts, I've been perusing my spam folder every day over the last few weeks, to look for any incorrectly-flagged support messages from customers.

It's really surprising to me how outright spam — not like unwanted marketing messages, but totally garbage spam spam — is seemingly still sent via manual labor. It dropped off precipitously right before Christmas, stayed very low, and now has picked up again today.

Glad they get vacation time, I guess?

I don’t know what’s going on with the missing video poster image, but the other two sloppy-looking truncation mistakes would be solved simply by making the minimum width of the window slightly larger.

Here’s Siri's utterly botched result for “What was the Vikings-Bears score last week?”, and ChatGPT's response to the exact same query.

Siri is technically correct that the Vikings and Bears did not play between Dec 8 and last Saturday, Dec. 15, but they did play last week on Sunday. [Edit: Monday] ChatGPT completely nailed it, with the correct score in the first paragraph and more details below, including sources at ESPN and Reuters.

Are these 15 “interoperability requests” Meta has filed in the EU for deeper access to the internals of iOS public? Where are they?

Apple says Meta is seeking low-level access that would break both user privacy and device security.

Meta says Apple is using “privacy” as a bullshit excuse to avoid even reasonable interoperability.

But without reading the requests, there’s no way to say which side is more right than the other.
