Well, water was a bunch shallower than normal. Got quite a way down a channel I normally go through and discovered it had turned into what looked like a beaver dam. Trapped. So I got to do a bit of backtracking.

More time on the water isn't a bad thing.

Been itching to get out on the water after a couple weeks of sunny days. My wife says the water is still too cold, but there's no ice and I have a wetsuit, so how bad can it be?

Did the bike/kayak thing again. 8 miles of the bike towing the kayak and 6.5 miles of the kayak carrying the bike. I spent the whole day with a big stupid smile on my face. It felt AMAZING to be out there – both on the trails and on the water.

That doesn't work. I can't read the text and my phone can't read the QR code. How do people do nutty stuff like this and let it stand?

Maybe if they printed the code on two separate pieces of white paper, then sandwiched a black sheet between them before they laminated it?

No, no, no suggestions. Not my circus, not my monkeys.

Tight time limits, so I picked a dense spot I haven't visited in a couple years. More fun per hour! There were never any trails, so I expected to do real bushwhacking. Years of growth made sure of that!

Three pictures for you. Two of them are the direction I was walking. Well, walking is too strong a word for what I was doing. The third picture, of the creek, that's the prize.

Out for a 3 mile walk with my wife on her favorite paved trail. It mostly follows a small creek. The view, the sound, the birds chirping… It's a nice walk.

The long walk. Mile 19.5. Well, my wife finished what she was doing and insisted on picking me up on her way home. So the last 2 miles didn't happen. That's okay, I was in my home territory, so I didn't miss anything new. And I wasn't thrilled about walking the last hour in the dark 😉.

I did the whole trip on 3 liters. Can't do that in the summer! I did stop to refill when I got down to one liter remaining – playing safe because I knew the final stretch was away from water.

The long walk. Mile 15. Got myself good and lost. But really, how much trouble can I get into as long as I can hear the river? And it's a good thing, because I found a spot where I walked through ferns for about a half mile. What a treat!

Got on lots of other little trails that are completely unfamiliar to me. And, well, lost enough that I had to resort to bushwhacking when what I thought was a trail turned out to be wishful thinking. It just turns a walk into an adventure!

The long walk. Mile 10. Right on schedule, the 4% chance of rain hit me, followed by 5 minutes of sun. Back to the normal cold cloudy day now.

Following the river, traipsing through all the gravel and cobble bars, taking the "other trail" every time I have a choice.

I've stopped several times, shaking my head in amazement at how much fun I'm having.

The long walk. Mile 5. Had Lyft drop me off 15 miles downstream before sunrise. The plan is to walk home. What with side trails and all, I'm expecting maybe 20 miles. Not really sure and don't really care.

The sun almost made an appearance, but quickly hid behind clouds. Nice day for a walk, no wind, temperature about 45F or 7C.

Pretty quiet out here on the trails.

Short 7 mile walk out to the closest woodland, my favorite. It's got a eucalyptus grove, oak woods, pines, and olives. Yes, olives. And, because this is gold country, it also has piles of cobble.

It's just so much fun to go through so many different types of country all packed into one place. And… I managed to get lost because the trails have changed. Just followed the sun and got it straightened out. Just made it more fun.

Out for a walk on a cloudy day. Limited time, so only about 6 miles. Walked around the "Mississippi Bar" on the Lower American River. The defining feature is the huge expanse of cobblestone mounds left over from gold mining. Over the decades, trees, grass, dirt, and development have hidden the cobble, but cobble fields are still evident for miles along the river.

It's really easy to fall climbing cobble, and there's nobody around, so I was very careful with my footing!

I ordered a few hundred dollars of small gifts. They all came in one gray plastic bag. UPS (un)helpfully dropped the bag off in our driveway instead of putting it on the porch like everyone else.

My wife backed the car over it.

It could be worse. The larger expensive items came through okay. Smaller items were crushed. Pretty much the opposite of what I'd expected.

I set out for a long day hike, but I got a late start:

Five miles of paved walking to get to the first dirt trail. Two more miles before I hit the first wooded area. Two miles in the woods, then oh, my, look at the time. I promised my wife I'd be home for dinner. Shortcut three miles through town along roads to get home. Made it in time.

"The woods are lovely, dark and deep. But I have promises to keep and miles to go"... for dinner.

A considerable amount of cheating. Got away from the fog and clouds by driving up to Mt. Tamalpais. We drove almost to the summit, then walked around the mountain (0.7 miles). Just amazing views!

Got my wife about a quarter of the way up to the the summit; she was nice enough to let me go the rest of the way while she waited on a bench.

I checked stats during the scramble/climb: heart 113bpm and oxygen 99%.Oh yah, it's only 2500 feet. @jds would eat my lunch. It's good to have goals.

Lucked out again. Wife insisted I take a vacation with her to Muir Woods. It was 100% overcast the whole drive until we pulled into the park… and then it suddenly became blue skies.

The pictures lie. It was actually fairly dark and gloomy in most of the forest. Those big Coastal Redwoods can get packed together pretty tightly and they block a lot of light.

Every bend in the trail held an "oh, wow" view. We did a small 3 mile loop with about 900 feet of elevation gain.

Totally lucked out. Overcast rainy windy day, but I was determined to go for a walk anyway. And as soon as I stepped outside, it cleared up.

Only about 4 miles, just killing time while my tire got fixed. Never pass up a chance to enjoy the river!

One of these is not like the other.

Getting a tire repaired and the tire shop is only a mile from the river. Cutting through a park with oaks and Liquidambar trees to get to the river. Lots of little balls on the ground from the trees. And then I had a "waitaminute" moment and had to turn back to see what triggered it.

Well, I got a little walk in Istanbul, somewhere between 4-5 miles. I'd planned for a lot more. I finished my work a day early, so I had Friday off. But then I got a panicked email from another customer and ended up spending 6 hours writing data extraction scripts for them. At least I had some time to get outside!

Yes, there are lots of cats. Friendly cats. Everybody feeds them.

No, they don't use salad dressing as a rule. Turns out you don't really need dressing if you don't use lettuce.

2/2 - Short 11 mile (18km) hike today. Dirt paths, my favorite. My wife looks at these and says "more dirt and rocks". It's okay, I take other pictures she likes. But dirt paths call to me. It's just so amazing out there surrounded by all the plants – and yes, by all the dirt and rocks ;)

Sometimes other people post dirt paths, and… I get it. You get on that path and you don't want to stop. I see that path and think "Wow, I'd love to be there"!
