I said that when I moved out of the United States, I'd do as much as I could to help everyone back home. I really love the last part of this article written by an immigration attorney who details some things that are very easy for allies in the U.S. to do, especially if they have the right to and are able to vote in local elections: https://www.qasimrashid.com/p/trumps-mass-anti-immigrant-raids

It is just not my week to enjoy media by British/UK creators. First, the Gaiman thing, and then I just learned that two years ago, Tom Scott chose to take down the collaboration video he did with stage combat fighter/author Jill Bearup because of a conversation he had with her about remarks she had posted, then deleted about trans activism. And I had tossed $20 her way as well after some of her other YT vids had been demonetized before Christmas. Cripes.

Check out Section 15, and read to the end. Not giving people the option to opt out of this clause is very problematic when it comes to consumer protections.

I'm very lucky that I only just noticed this because I was perusing methods to improve my job-search process.
If you have used Coursera in the past and do not want to be bound to mandatory arbitration, they are not letting you have the option to opt out of the clause in the agreement which went into effect on January 1, 2025. Time to download your Accomplishments and delete your account, because binding arbitration is only good for large corporations, not individuals. 1/

Yesterday, he denied service to someone who he felt in his "reasonable inference, [would intend] to harass, intimidate, threaten, or promote hatred against an individual or group". It's not a lot and surely the former customer will find somewhere else where they get services because of course other service providers may be okay with that kind of thing.
But not Sandwich.Net. 2/2

My spouse has been running Sandwich.Net and the associated IRC server since 1997. There are only a few times where he has had to deny service due to a violation of the Terms of Service. When we talk about operational procedures, my role as project manager and senior customer support representative is to give him the advice he needs to feel comfortable in how he conveys this kind of denial to the person. 1/

From the "This is too weirdly coincidental" department, a new episode of "This Week in Fandom History" just dropped. It focused on Kielle and the founding of the CBFFAs, and I was just talking to a friend about the episode of "This American Life" I was on where I talked about how I became agnostic after Kielle died. The episode made me cry in the good way because of how well they described her legacy of community-building.

Ah, this is going to be a sad day for me....

I know I became a more tolerant person because of Jan. She was also a kind spirit, a fierce defender of people she loved, and so very kind to her mother of whom she was a caretaker when she couldn't care for herself. I hope Jan's mom is okay now, too.

Eight years ago after the 2016 general election is when my spouse and I first started talking about moving to Canada. Four years after is when got first our visas (work/student), then our permanent residency in 2021. A week or so ago, we got our Canadian citizenship.
I feel so damn full of privilege rn, and I really don't know how to feel about that.

@thetyee It seems to me that there are two things at play here: the safety of a specific Palestinian kid in a specific school and generally teaching children that just because some people in Palestine do not support the Jewish state it doesn't mean that all Palestinians want to eradicate Judaism.
More and more, I am thinking that humanity creating organized religion was a mistake. 2/End

Here's a good article from @thetyee which hints at the administrative problems faced by teachers regarding issues that are related to combating racism and prejudices in public schools. The parent quoted in the article offered to speak with the teacher regarding her family's Palestinian heritage but the offer was denied.

Did the tourist thing and went to the 2nd floor of the Eiffel Tower today. I couldn't go all the way to the top because I had my rollator with me & for safety reasons people with mobility devices aren't allowed to go to the top. Still stunning views, however.

If I had balls, I would tell all the people who make decisions about how Microsoft Outlook works to suck them and to make it a real good sucking. Like, the amount of money they get paid by the hour? That's how long they should spend on each square centimetre of my nonexistent balls.

I am so stoked to announce that this year--after over a decade of wishing for it to happen in reality and after having moved off of Vancouver Island--I will be returning to the Island to be an on-site @desertbus volunteer! I'll be spending a week at the new Moonbase helping keep things tidy and organized during the Dawn Guard shifts (from 06:00 to 12:00) starting on November 8 (technically the 9th). Who knows, I might even make it on to the stage to join in for bits and the random dance parties.

I almost feel as if this is something that is only obvious to a small portion of people who can say they're uber-geeky science fiction/fantasy fans or were in a Science Fiction Literature class taught by the late and awesome Dr. Atara Stein.

Back then, I would think about the angle I'd have to use to stop a robber if confronted in our old bedroom in Minneapolis so that I wouldn't hit a neighbour's house. TG we never had to deal with that and we sold the gun before we moved to Canada. But this is not a good verdict because it doesn't address the fact that Taylor's boyfriend wouldn't have had to defend his apartment if the police had executed the warrant correctly. 2/End

One reading of the fed judge's state of mind in this verdict is that a gun owner who believes that someone is breaking into their home is responsible for the consequences of deciding to use a fire arm to defend themselves. And yes, that's just what I remember learning from my firearms safety classes. 1/
