Local folks, a query:

I need to either—

a. find a print shop that will print a 12x18 (or A3) sheet on regular paper (i.e. not a poster), or

b. source some 12x18 (or A3!) paper of my own.

Online, none of the usual office/print shops will print full color on anything larger than US ledger (11x17), and none of them carry metric or large-format paper for option B either :-/.

My usual trick of queuing the project up as an architectural print won't work—it's full color art.

I am getting a new desk next week; this week I made a fancy desk shelf. I call it “Grovemade at home” 😂. Walnut europly and some 1/4” cherry for the middle shelf. Finish is “Sample 73” hard wax from Foureyes.

The cubby at right is sized for a m4 Mac mini (plus docking stand, when that releases). The shelf isn’t super durable but should be fine for light organizers. I can tuck my keyboard and mouse under it if I want the room in front of the monitor for any reason.

it was not so bad!

I am a costco member now.

This is a further part of the "ditch amazon" experimentation.

The sort of bulk household purchases we make for the home business cost $20 less on this run at Costco than on Amazon. Amazon delivers, but their membership fee is more than 2x the price too.

So maybe a trip to Costco every couple of months + the difference in prices and fees > free prime shipping.

How much extra am I paying for books? Over the last six months I've purchased 15 books and paid about $45 more than I would have at Amazon.

Over that period, I've also picked up 8 or so audiobooks. I've switched to libro.fm (which purports to give a local bookstore of my choice a kickback) from audible. Credits are in general about $1.50 more per book than Audible. I buy about 1.5 audiobooks a month, so that will add up to about $15 more over the same time period.

Not terrible.

As I purchase things not at Amazon, I am keeping a score sheet. Here is the list of the first four things I order regularly and historically just bought at amazon assuming it was cheaper. I've saved about $90 (incl. taxes and shipping) so far. I have ordered in slightly higher volume than I usually do. Shipping time is not notably slower than Amazon 2-day.

Including the order from Olive Young! DHL from Seoul or Tokyo is terrifyingly fast.

You can't really do "get it to me tomorrow", but...

Decided to order one of these new M4Pro Mac Minis to replace my 2017 (!) iMac, whose hard drive is... slowly dying.

I've got three weeks to find a monitor, now. Hoping to pick up a deal on a Mac Studio Display somewhere in that window :).

Random thing I learned this morning: 80% of the world's supply of high-purity quartz, necessary for advanced semiconductor manufacture, comes from the mountainside town of Spruce Pine, NC.

They got 25" of rain from Helene and the town is just now starting to reopen, with partial operations restored at one of the two mines.
