Random thing I learned this morning: 80% of the world's supply of high-purity quartz, necessary for advanced semiconductor manufacture, comes from the mountainside town of Spruce Pine, NC.
They got 25" of rain from Helene and the town is just now starting to reopen, with partial operations restored at one of the two mines.
