Thanks for serving, Tim. Truly honoring Dr King today in person, and on Elon Muskโs totally normal right-wing propaganda machine. Iโd salute you, but I think thereโs been quite enough of that.

I've been steadily posting a few photos over at Pixelfed (which isn't really "over at Pixelfed" since you could just as easily follow it right here in your Mastodon client of choice). Itโs kind of a nice excuse to flip through old photos and pick ones. The account didn't exist before so no pressure to post what's currently happening or maintain chronological order. It feels silly to have to rely on hashtags so much, but there are upsides and downsides to no algorithm.

Notifications Need Real Work, Not False Summaries
While we debate the crappiness of the notification summaries we should probably think about what it is that really needs to be solved, which isn't just summaries from an LLM thatโs in โbetaโ.

These summarization features require human feedback and intervention. Particularly for push notifications about news events, as we've seen. There is no option to report a summary is wrong and suggest an edit. Filing a Feedback as if every summarization error was a unique and addressable bug is not a solution for what is, in essence, a content moderation issue that requires human judgement. When you get into summaries of personal text messages and emails you get into thorny privacy concerns.

I don't think these changes go far enough. I do appreciate that there are people that are more tolerant of errors in these summaries. I don't think people really understand what they're getting into when they turn notification summaries on, or even remember what they picked when 18.1 was released in October. Labeling them a beta, and saying that they "may contain errors" doesn't explain how Apple expects this to ever not be a beta and not contain errors

Blogged a little about my first impressions of Pixelfed. Obviously, I don't want to judge them too harshly on the day the iOS app launched, but I'm working through my thought process in public from the perspective of an Instagram replacement.

I was testing image bounds (NERD) and uploaded a pano. It never showed up. I selected some other images and it ate those too. So not sure things are going smoothly over there on mobile app launch day. The app didnโt report any error so โฆ not ideal.

Okโฆ I downloaded the Pixelfed mobile app and created an account. I donโt love that itโs all owned by Daniel Supernault, since it could go very Matt Mullenweg. Onboarding experience could be better. The big Pixelfed.social server seems a little overloaded. Honestly, the thing that disappointments me the most is the image compression. I wonder if self-hosting has better control over that, but I donโt want to self-host (seriously, look at the instructions for that).

Am I misremembering it or was there some discontent with the
Pixelfed guy? Not that that excuses Meta blocking the links, Iโve just been wary of Pixelfed but I canโt remember why.

Has anyone looked into why Safari on the Mac just doesnโt load web pages fully and refuses to refresh? Or maybe checked on why JavaScript takes down the page like itโs a system 7.5 crash? I donโt usually run into these problems this often, but I have a lot of tabs open researching stuff and maybe the tabs are making it extra buggy?
