Ok… I downloaded the Pixelfed mobile app and created an account. I don’t love that it’s all owned by Daniel Supernault, since it could go very Matt Mullenweg. Onboarding experience could be better. The big Pixelfed.social server seems a little overloaded. Honestly, the thing that disappointments me the most is the image compression. I wonder if self-hosting has better control over that, but I don’t want to self-host (seriously, look at the instructions for that).

I was testing image bounds (NERD) and uploaded a pano. It never showed up. I selected some other images and it ate those too. So not sure things are going smoothly over there on mobile app launch day. The app didn’t report any error so … not ideal.

Blogged a little about my first impressions of Pixelfed. Obviously, I don't want to judge them too harshly on the day the iOS app launched, but I'm working through my thought process in public from the perspective of an Instagram replacement.

I've been steadily posting a few photos over at Pixelfed (which isn't really "over at Pixelfed" since you could just as easily follow it right here in your Mastodon client of choice). It’s kind of a nice excuse to flip through old photos and pick ones. The account didn't exist before so no pressure to post what's currently happening or maintain chronological order. It feels silly to have to rely on hashtags so much, but there are upsides and downsides to no algorithm.

@joesteel why didn’t you choose gram.social, which is run by awesome @stux

@joesteel this wasn’t a “chide” (or “chiding”)…. You’re a somewhat technical person so I assumed you’d know pixelfed is federated and different servers exists
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from piyuv@techhub.social
@piyuv I do know it's federated and different servers exist, but there’s very little information to help someone pick a server, which leads to people picking the default. The way you structured your response was that I should have known about gram.social specifically. If you had intended to recommend gram.social, then don't say “why didn't you choose, gram social”. Say, “I recommend gram.social.”

@joesteel just trying to follow people today has taken upwards of 30s in the app and the button doesn’t have a loading state. Wouldn’t be surprised if you’d just have to let it sit for a few minutes. (You can also add your account in Ivory and use it for posting since they handle things better.)

@mosssupply Ivory worked for upload. I wonder what’s going on with the mobile client

@joesteel yeah, I'm not crazy about the official app (I've been using it for a while now via TestFlight) to be honest.
My Pixelfed experience has largely been mediated through @impressia (used to be called Vernissage), and that has a pretty nice UX (especially with the three-column view on iPad).

@jaredwhite Thanks. I’m trying it out now. It’s a little spartan, and I don’t love the way the galleries can shrink/expand the bounds of the item in the feed, but it’s good to know there are alternatives.

@reppep @ivory It already is. Maybe there was a formatting issue with your search? Try “@joesteel@pixelfed.social”

@joesteel Same happened to me, post never appeared. My old film photos are scans at 4800dpi but usually around 5MB, don’t know if that’s the problem. But not reporting an error is somewhat disconcerting. We’ll see if it improves.

@joesteel There's an "IMAGE_QUALITY” environment variable that's set to “80" by default.
From the docs:
Set the image optimization quality, between 1-100. Lower uses less space, higher more quality
