Today I've officially become a member of @osmcz (OpenStreetMap Czech Republic, registered association). After almost a year of frequent contributions to #OpenStreetMap, I thought it was time to take the step.

No, každopádně bye bye, iDnes.

When I read the essay "The Power of the Powerless," one of the most interesting ideas I found there was the concept of the parallel polis introduced by dissident Vaclav Benda. It was basically a parallel structure of services to those controlled by the regime. One example was the so-called flat university. Professors who weren't allowed to teach in universities gave lectures in someone's apartment to students who weren't allowed to attend universities. This was difficult for the communist regime to target because it was not an institution but a fluid group of people.

In my opinion, the #Fediverse is very well positioned to be the parallel polis of our time if things really go south in the U.S. or elsewhere. ✌️

[#]Garmin watch owners, beware! There is a problem with a GPS coordination file that can brick your watch. Until it's resolved, avoid any GPS activities and/or turn the watch connectivity completely off.

My model is affected. 😕

UPDATE: Garmin has replaced the corrupted file with a fixed on their servers. If you have an affected model, but your device hasn't gotten into the boot loop, you're advised to go the Garmin Connect app and enforce the device sync to download the fixed file. The article has been updated accordingly.

Last 24 hours from our #AirQuality monitor. This is a typical day when you can already smell it. We live in a residential area on the outskirts of #Brno and in winter the air quality tends to be (sometimes much) worse than in the city center. All because of local heating systems that use wood and, to a lesser extent, coal.

To get some experience as a video content creator, I started @nextcloud_academy. It's inspired by explaining basic things to my in-laws over the phone. The channel will have short videos with step-by-step tutorials that you can show to people who are new to #Nextcloud.

I'm starting by showing how to set up an automatic backup of your photos and videos on #Android. (Bear with me, it's the first video I've ever put together 🙈 ).

Is there any reason to use #OpenShot or #PiTiVi instead of #Kdenlive these days (besides being written in different toolkit)?

My mother-in-law set up the #Nextcloud app to back up photos from her #Android phone. However, no photos were uploaded. I thought she did something wrong, but in fact it was set up correctly, including all permissions. But nothing was even queued for upload. I couldn't make it work either.

I got a recommendation for #FolderSync, but it's freemium and it felt fishy with all the data consent dialogs. Then I went to #FDroid and discovered #RoundSync and wow, it's a great piece of software, clean, lean and does reliably what I want it to do. The sad fact is that @newhinton, app developer, gets 3€/month for it on Liberapay. We really need to get more money into open source apps.

My grandmother's 90th birthday present ready: a chronicle of her family all the way to the late 16th century.

If you ever want something like that (in the Czech Republic), I can only recommend @rodokmeny/ @margo.

With the #AirGradient air quality monitor in my hands for several days, I've finally fine-tuned the monitoring in #HomeAssistant. I've basically recreated what AirGradient has in its cloud dashboard.

And yes, the air quality here sucks today.

The #AirGradient air quality monitor arrived sooner than expected. It was really easy to assemble and connect to #HomeAssistant and it's already monitoring the air quality outside our house.

No customers want to pay for AI tools? Let's make all customers pay for them!

A reminder: #Nextcloud is only $5 per month at Hetzner. Not for a single user, but for an entire instance with plenty of disk space and no limit on the number of users.

I never appreciated enough how easy it is to set up #Nextcloud on #Linux (#Fedora Workstation) until I tried it on #Android and #Windows. You just type in the server URL and your credentials and you're good to go.

On Android, you have to install several apps and set up all kinds of permissions. I can deal with that, but it's not ready for the masses. And it's not much better on Windows.

I don't think I need to remind anyone that Mozilla was terribly late to the mobile market, and Firefox has had a tiny market share there ever since.

I often hear that #Mozilla got into trouble after they let Brendan Eich go, that that was the point where political voices overrode technical merit. In fact, these projects have a lot of momentum, these things take years to work out. It's actually the strategic leadership of Brendan Eich, who was CTO since 2005, that got Mozilla into trouble.

Today I came across a nice example of this from 2007.
