I often hear that #Mozilla got into trouble after they let Brendan Eich go, that that was the point where political voices overrode technical merit. In fact, these projects have a lot of momentum, these things take years to work out. It's actually the strategic leadership of Brendan Eich, who was CTO since 2005, that got Mozilla into trouble.

Today I came across a nice example of this from 2007.

I don't think I need to remind anyone that Mozilla was terribly late to the mobile market, and Firefox has had a tiny market share there ever since.

@sesivany not sure it would've been possible to do so much better in such an anticompetitive market where pre-installaltion basically decides everything for the majority of users tho ><

@valpackett Opera Mobile WAS pre-installed on many phones back then because they saw the opportunity early enough and simply had the best mobile browser. Even today Opera has more than 3 times of the Firefox mobile market share and they had a fraction of desktop market share and mindshare to build on.

I'm not saying Mozilla would have been able to fend off Chrome, but they would be doing much better now if they hadn't seen potential in the mobile market so terribly late.

@sesivany @valpackett Opera also worked out deals with lots of embedded devices. It was the browser on the Nintendo Wii, for example.
