I thought for sure that DUNE, PART TWO would be at the bottom of my Best Picture ranking. But I am now halfway through EMILIA PEREZ and this is the worst Best Picture nominee I've seen since THE TRIAL OF THE CHICAGO 7. It's so bad that I even LONG for Sorkin's bad dialogue. The film is condescendingly clueless about trans lives and Mexico. The songs are terrible. The "originality" is nonexistent. This is utter trash. Jacques Audiard is pure scum for making this.

I'm so fired up by I'M STILL HERE that I've ordered two volumes from Thomas Skidmore. Amazingly, there really isn't a lot in English on the Brazilian coup of 1964 and the subsequent military dictatorship. Two decades of fascism, torture, and "disappearances" of anyone perceived to be an "enemy." An awful period in Brazilian history that we should probably be studying now. Just in case. And we pretty much have little more than Skidmore? Really?

After seeing I'M STILL HERE, with its sophisticated and nuanced portrait of how the personal becomes the political, I am even more insulted by the superficial spectacle of DUNE, PART TWO. DUNE is for dimwitted and gullible children. It is soulless and stupid. But I'M STILL HERE is a film from the heart for thinking and feeling adults. A film that offers real questions and a deeply visceral conflict I simply haven't felt before. DUNE is merely junk.

Decades before SAVING PRIVATE RYAN, there was Samuel Fuller's masterpiece THE BIG RED ONE. And he doesn't get nearly enough credit for his claustrophobic closeups and sound design. I'd really love to see this movie on the big screen someday.

Irony and surreal imagery has flourished as a vital fuel for wit for centuries. And yet I am increasingly finding that even well-meaning liberals fail to grasp it. We need to acknowledge that there is a sufficient deficit in perception and interpretation that plagues Americans across the entire political spectrum.

Jesus Christ, the German Maxin 08 machine gun is a sound designer's dream. My god, how crisp and menacing! Astonishing that these WW1 guns survived so long.

DUNE PART TWO is an improvement over the first, but it is still saddled with yawn-inducing white savior tropes and thin characters. I really have no reason to care, but there are enough stunning visuals to keep me going. The David Lynch version of Herbert's epic, as flawed as it was, had a great deal of wild life to it. But Denis Villeneuve is a humorless corporate drone. My own anti-Atreides character in my space opera script will take the piss out of this hapless rigidity.

I have read most of Stephen King, but I've decided to start filling in my gaps so that I've read everything. I may offer thoughts here as I carry on. But he's arguably the most dependable popular fiction writer of the last fifty years. And there is always a new nuts-and-bolts storytelling move to learn from him, even when he repeats the same tropes.

ICE agents have been arresting and detaining thousands of immigrants in Northeastern cities. But where is CNN? The New York Times? Crickets on this. Meanwhile, local news is reporting all this, bless them. But let's make no mistake. Mass deportation and xenophobia is a NATIONAL issue. And the complicity of corporate media sycophants is not only shameful, but unethical and irresponsible.

When historians look back at the fall of America in the 2020s, they will say to themselves, "But it all could have been avoided if you had simply given every American a fair shot: a living wage, affordable housing, human rights, decent prices." They will marvel over our failure to summon fiercely benevolent progressive voices capable of holding a crowd from a population of 334 million people. And future nations will repeat the same mistakes. There will always be tyrants.

I think banning all links to X is a fantastic idea. If we starve Elon of his traffic, X will implode. I had someone on here ask me for a link to an X post. Going forward, I will not be linking to any X content here. I will offer screenshots, but you're going to have to do your own work. I refuse to do nothing after that fuckhead busted out his evil 1934 moved.

Many thanks to the CJR's Jake Lahut for revealing the self-serving and clueless nature of the White House Press Corps. Billy Wilder's great movie ACE IN THE HOLE was intended as a bitter warning about everything wrong with media, about not viewing the subjects impacted by your story as people. But these arrogant attention whores can't and never will.

After the 2024 election, I was so despondent that I succumbed to a binge drinking episode, which I swiftly course-corrected. Yesterday I didn't drink a single drop of alcohol. Not even a beer. Despite the fact that I was very angry about what transpired. Instead, I focused on resting and sleeping and controlled my headline intake. Because I want to be in good shape to fight fascism. Take care of yourself, yo. We need you strong for the resistance.

TikTokkers don't read? Then how do you account for Booktok? Why is is that EVERY book I recommend usually has six people in the comments saying, "Thanks. I'll buy it or check it out from the library." Then about a month later, I get a DM from one of these people after they've read it. And this sometimes spills over into email.
Really, the BlueSky twats are a bunch of joyless pricks who are hopelessly out of touch. They've forgotten what the Internet is about.

The anti-TikTok elitism on BlueSky (which is not especially ubiquitous in the Fediverse, I should note), complete with bogus claims that TikTokkers don't read or write (they do), only confirms my theory that BlueSky is a platform for closeted reactionaries who cosplay as liberal. As a friend recently put it, "Oh, Ed, I understand why you hate it there. It's Gen Xers and millennials learning how to be Boomers." Exactly. EXACTLY. 90% of BlueSky users are lifeless husks.

TikTok had one advantage that no other platform had. If you made a TikTok that was "controversial" (say, something that was extremely weird or railed into fascism), you'd usually gain enough followers to offset the loss of snowflakes. That is NOT the case with other social media. I worry that people will be deterred from speaking out because of their follower count. Even I am going to have to remind myself in a small way that follower count DOES NOT MATTER.
