I'm following quite a number of small web blogs, but they're all written in English and I'm wondering if there is also a German speaking small web community?

Question for the webmasters around here:

I'm parsing my web server logs with #goaccess. It tells me that this mornings blog post has around 2400 hits, 1600 visitors. The post includes an image, and I can see from the logs that the image has been accessed around 250 times.

I would expect the image to be downloaded roughly the same number of times as the website, however these numbers are vastly different. And I don't really understand why.

Any ideas?

And related, much of the traffic on the site is from crawlers with the user agent "http.rb/5.2.0". What could that be?

A friend is thinking about setting up a blog. Great idea, and I think he has a lot of interesting things to say, but my friend is not tech savvy AT ALL, so he needs an easy to use and foolproof framework.

Telling him to learn an SSG like Hugo is probably not feasible as that will overload him, and I could tell him/help him to install Wordpress which works, but it's also this huge bloated thing and there's the recent drama surrounding it.... so I'm wondering if there's a lighter framework that's easy to use and doesn't take too long to learn to recommend to him? Any suggestions?

So my chosen home on the fediverse is oldbytes.space, which is a Mastodon instance about retro computing. I chose this because I like retro computing.... And I post about retro computing sometimes, but definitely not all the time, not even most of the time actually.

So I'm wondering, is there a Mastodon community that would be better suited for me, given the type of things I post?

To be clear, I'm not saying there's anything wrong with oldbytes, there's great people on here and nobody ever told me to get lost or that my postings aren't wanted or anything like that. But I've felt bad for a long time now for "spamming" a timeline that's supposed to be about retro computing with posts that have nothing to do with that, that's all.

So, any ideas where I could go?

Two days ago I took part in the Blog Question Challenge 2025 and I challenged @mattof, @jnv and @cinimodev to do the same.

They got on it right away, and here are their posts:

Great posts guy, they were really fun to read! And thanks again @chrisod for tagging me :)

By popular demand (=one person asked for it) here's the script I use to announce new blog posts here on mastodon:

https://codeberg.org/82mhz/postToMasto

It works by parsing the RSS feed of my site, and if it detects a new post since it was last run, it creates a post on here via the API.

It's ugly, it's messy, it's pretty much untested... but it works for me, so maybe you can make use of it.

@cinimodev there you go ;)

I don't have detailed analytics, but I can see from my web server logs that my post from earlier today has been accessed 1400 times.

Wow. I'm pretty sure that's a record.

Thanks everyone for clicking through and reading!!

I don't know who might ever need this, but I just learned that if you download and install Active Sync 4.5 from Microsoft on Windows XP, you can use tethering on Android, meaning you can use your Android phone as a wifi interface (which doesn't work out of the box on XP). Might work on Windows 2000 as well, but I haven't tested this.

Super handy if your wifi is WPA3 encrypted, which Windows XP doesn't support.
