Amen to that.
I've recently build a new system (I replace my main pc every 6 - 8 years) and it is fast... really fast.
But in the end: I could also do almost everything I want on a mini PC or a laptop - except gaming (But my life does not depend on that)
In the early days hardware became obsolete so quickly.... great example: SATA HDD against SSD, Single core against multi core etc.
One can have great milage with about any pc currently!

Absolutely. It's nice to have a really fast PC for sure, that's why I keep having the urge to upgrade... but unless something comes along that really makes upgrading worth it, I'll pass.
SSDs are a great example actually. Just switching to an SSD from a HDD while keeping everything else the same makes you feel like you bought a new computer, it's such a massive difference! That's totally worth the upgrade.

Indeed, agree with you on that.
There are simple currently not really many "game changers" that one has to have.
Sure, core count increases and VRAM and other bits here and there... but, a machine from 2018 is still very capable for example.
SSD's were game changers for sure!

Out of curiosity... what are the specs of your new system?

Currently:
i7 14700
64GB RAM
1TB NVMe
6600XT graphics card
way overkill for what I do tbh.

It's a nice rig though, and that will last you a while!
With my upgrade philosophy I will arrive at a system with these kind of specs in around 2032 or so 😄

@82mhz
True that, it will last quite long indeed 🙂
Getting milage out of a system is important 😉
Besides, I do not need that overkill system at all.... I just wanted it tbh.
Given how quick everything moves you'll have something even better than this at 2032 😂

@82mhz I went through that last month. I replaced Pop!_OS and Gnome 42 with Debian 12 and XFCE, and now my PC feels much faster.

@82mhz right there with you. My main home server is an Intel i7-8700K with 64GiB memory and no plans on replacing it anytime soon.
For laptops I still use a 2015 Macbook Pro and a 2013 Macbook Air thanks to OpenCore Legacy allowing them to run recent versions of MacOS.
They've had their issues lately though (heat pipes can go bad!?) and broke down and bought a new Lenovo Ideapad with a Ryzen 7 8845HS. Partiality to get ahead of any economic mess we might encounter in the coming year too, but planning to use it until the wheels fall off.

@82mhz For similar reasons, with my last computer purchase, I got a Framework laptop (AMD), and hope to replace the parts as I go. I had 16gb of RAM, then upgraded to 32gb when I had some more cash. Maybe in a few years I'll need to replace the keyboard, and maybe in 10 years or so I'll update the motherboard and change some ports, and so on. Really great laptop.

@82mhz My daily driver is a 14-year-old laptop and it still does pretty much everything I need. I've upgraded the RAM (4GB→10GB) and the drive (HDD→SSD), but it still runs like a champ. Occasionally FF or Chromium gets a little unresponsive, but I'm pretty sure that would happen no matter what CPU I had. My only disappointment in the hardware is that the CPU doesn't have virtualization primitives so I can't run #bhyve (but jails do most of what I want there)
